The Impact Of Brexit On Football

So what are people’s thoughts on this?

It’s been mentioned before about the issues over visas that could arise, but given the lucrative nature of football it may not be that huge an issue and one would assume the home office would come to some form of compromise.

However, I think the bigger issue will be the value of the pound and how that will negatively effect premier league clubs in the transfer market. I presume many clubs hold euro and dollar accounts (especially in our case), but with the vast majority of revenue for premier league clubs coming in pounds it will still weaken their current position. To what extent, however, remains to be seen.

People talk about the pl bubble bursting, and while I don’t think it will burst, per se, the impact of Brexit on the domestic tv market and attendances could see decrease in revenue for many, in addition to the weakening pound.

It’s also worth noting that our debts and interest repayments are in dollars, which could impact us further.

Matchday revenue is still a lot, we make over £100m a year. The last lot of tv rights already went down, and that was without Brexit. So it’s possible it will go down further in the coming years. This is all worst case scenario of Brexit, and I’m not saying it will have a major impact, but it could reduce the revenues and cause issues with prize money in Europe and transfers as a result of exchange rates. We’ll have to wait and see how Brexit pans out, however.

I don't think they did go down. Domestically they went down slightly(comparatively) but internationally there was a big hike, meaning the TV deal actually went up. Last I read it was going to be a billion more than the previous deal, with all things considered.

The VISA problems may well come into it, the whole department is horrendously under funded, under staffed and under skilled.

The money in football will mean it gets priority but there's still a high chance issues would arise with EU footballers who currently play without any visa requirements.

The value of the pound itself would effect the buying power from overseas but running costs would be quite interesting IMO.

While domestic revenues and pound value would certainly take a massive plunge in a full dckhead brexit, the value of the money from overseas which is still a huge chunk could potentially make general running costs "cheaper" (in my head at least)

In theory your direct running costs could stay fairly stable even if the pound fluctuates, stadium, ground, UK based staff at least until things like fuel, food etc come into it which will all be effected too. All the while those overseas funds would go further to the pound.

Long term though, it would be worse of course.

Another issue is; are player contracts specifically based in pounds or have players began to agree different parameters?

This is from an awful paper but I remember reading a few instances of players wanting to agree their wages in a more stable currency

"Last year, Manchester United, the world's wealthiest club in terms of revenues, revealed new overseas signings have asked to be paid in euros rather than pounds.

The club turned down the bid, insisting it did not have millions of euros on hand.

At the time, Cliff Baty, Manchester United's chief financial officer, said: 'A lot of European players will want to be paid in euros, understandably to a degree."

I suspect the impact of Brexit on football will be negligible.

Clubs won’t be able to flood their academies with u18 EU nationals. They’ll need to do some extra admin to get foreigners here and they might only be able to bid £60m for a player where previously they could bid £65.

PL clubs are so far ahead of the majority of the competition in terms of wealth that absolute worst case scenario is that it levels the playing field ever so slightly.

Don’t worry, we aren’t going to have to worry about matching contract offers with Sevilla anytime soon.

According to Brexiteers, Brexit will strenghten the UK economy and the value of the Pound and the Euro will plummet as the EU is a facing oblivion as many other EU members will want to follow suit.

Well, yes.

But when it comes to superconductors, I tend to listen to physicists. When it comes to myocardial infarctions, I tend to listen to cardiothoracic surgeons. And when it comes to macroeconomics, I tend to listen to economists.

Or are we still fed up of experts?

The experts know nothing. Your man down in the paper factory knows best.

Scruttocks, I read about that before with regard to players wanting to be paid in Euros. Could put some players off in the future depending on the state of the pound. Though as I mentioned, if the Tories have their way and make the UK a tax haven it could mitigate that.

Yeah that's definitely a possibility. Although I'm not sure how the Tories could get through such significant tax cuts for the super rich (in the short term anyway) when the economic cliff edge that is Brexit will be destroying what's left of the essential services people rely on.

Then again a lot of Tory voters are born to worship at the feet of their betters and will likely deem see it as necessary...
