Longstaff, a poorer version of McTominay

That's the verdict of the very data-driven team behing the Tifo football YouTube channel and podcast, which they raise the question as to why on earth are we interested in him??

Some key points raised:

- His £50m price tag is obscene, with his estimated value much much less than this
- His skill sets are very similar to Mc.T, just worse, so again, why do we want a similar player to what we already have, but worse? What problem would Lomgstaff solve that we currently have?
- As a player that's fairly-good at regaining the ball and simply turning over possession, is he the type of player that reflects where we want to be as a club? He's not at all the type of player that will turn us into title winners, so why is he even in consideration?

They also talk about a DoF, Macguire amongst other things in the latest pod. The DoF points are really interesting

I'm suspicious of anyone who makes definitive claims about the characteristics (let alone the ceiling) of a player they've barely watched. A lot of our fans who are now making positive noises about McTominay were suggesting he belonged in the Championship after seeing plenty more of him than even Newcastle supporters have seen of Longstaff.

My very superficial YouTube-based view is that Longstaff doesn't particularly resemble McT in style. There does appear to be a bit of the Carrick about him in some of his one-touch passing as well as his long balls, something I haven't detected in McT. Whether he can get close to Carrick's level I have no idea, but I imagine our scouts have a lot more data and first-hand professional observation to go on than those of us armed with a Sky subscription and the internet.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You're right to be suspicious in any of our abilities to truly judge a player or his potential, but all you can do is look at the information infront of you to make an informed decision. That information is

- He's barely played for Newcastle - why?
- He's barely played for Newcastle - how can a club accurately judge his ability to perform at the highest level based on this?
- He's never been capped for England at any level
- He's potential transfer fee is beyond ridiculous, we're talking past the peak maddnessof £35m for Carroll here

Based on that info, it's a truly alarming potential signing
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Angel Gomes, who we can all appreciate is a super talent, has only made 27 appearances in total across all England Youth levels. James Garner is on even less with 16. Mason Greenwood - the pick of our youth - has made 12 England appearances.

I accept that these players are a little bit younger than Longstaff. Tuanzebe is the same age as him, and has only made 12 appearances at England Youth level.

I just don't think that's a good indicator to be honest.

Looking at his stats, he's made 73 senior appearances in the men's game across two loans and last season at Newcastle. Interestingly, he's scored 14 goals. So it looks like he's had some very good loans (45 games and 9 goals at Blackpool). Had he not been injured last season, he'd have surely had even more appearances to his name under Benitez.

As others have said, different players develop at different rates and the fact he actually has quite a lot of experience already in the men's game in Scotland and League One shouldn't be discounted. I think those experiences will have been more indicative of his level and important to his progression than games against other kids in an England shirt.

Ultimately I've only seen the clips everyone else has, but he looks a very good passer of the ball - Carrick-esque in possession actually - and has obviously adapted to the physical demands of the league. Seems to have a goal in him, too (1 in 5 throughout his senior professional career so far from midfield, 2 in 9 games for Newcastle!).

If he's available for a reasonable price, he sounds like a player worth taking a calculated gamble on - a bit like Dan James.

In today's market, I wouldn't be against this. Hopefullly he's more of the £10-15m price bracket, though I doubt it.

If we go anyway near £30m I'd be dissapointed.

Cant see Newcastle selling at that price. Not like they have tons of talent in their squad.

A very logically and thought out response, thanks Berba. Some good points raised to be fair.

Hopefully, hopefully, we can get him for a relatively good price
