An analysis of Ole's tactics

https://totalfootballanalysis.com/head-coach-analysis/ole-gunnar-solskjaer-manchester-united-tactical-analysis

I came across this article a couple of months ago but didn't get around to posting it. Watching Ole set us up and tactics in most of the preseason matches, this analysis of his time at Molde looks quite astute. The demand for a higher level of fitness than under Jose has been taken up by the players and we even managed to see Martial pressing and winning the ball a couple of times this summer.

Obviously there's a few personnel changes from when the article was written, but I'm really looking forward to the season to see if the players can enact what Ole wants to see. James and AWB should definitely help deliver on the style of play described in the article.

It'll certainly be a contrast to the mood the club was in last August.

Great read. We saw parts of if last season, and quite more of it in preseason.

We're still missing players that can make that system work in midfield and CBs (Unless he goes with Lindelof and Tuanzebe). Matic is finished at this level. Mata is passed his best but can still be useful. We need rid of a few players. The right side I think Mason and James will be used there along with Lingard.

Cheers lads. Thought it made a good change from Twitter transfer rumours.

Remember reading this a while back, nice to re-read it again after seeing a few things pre-season and how we seem to want to play.

Will definitely take time though, as we still have a number of players that just don't fit into it, and we can't replace everyone in one summer.

Thanks Dave.

We’ve seen Ole do things a bit differently this preseason and no doubt Mick Phelan and McKenna will have influenced his approaches.

Certainly we’ve seen full and situational high presses used consistently and fierce counter-pressing (which has been particularly good to watch).

As well as the 4-2-3-1, which we still don’t have the midfielders for, we’ll surely see the diamond and 4-3-3 employed from time-to-time against the other big boys.

I can’t remember whether it was during the Inter game (I think so), but at one point we had Dan James on the left side of midfield, very deep and tucked in in a compact three behind a ten, which will no doubt have been a situational shift.

After adjusting to the bizarre-looking situation, it actually pleased me to see the coaching staff, even in preseason, proactively switching to an unorthodox approach in an attempt to rebalance the game.

Interesting article, thanks for posting.
It will be better to watch than Jose's setup, we will have to wait and see if the results are there. I'm prepared to wait, certainly for at least this season before worrying too much about points, barring a catastrophe.

I find that people just aren’t that interested in tactical discussion, Mike.

I don’t think there’s a big interest in it on our board. Some posters I have barely, if ever, seen posting on that side of the game.
