Having watched Smith bat a few times over the years, I still cannot fathom how he averages 62 in test Cricket.
He's obviously a good player, but he's a former spinning all-rounder who looked like a decent number six in his early years, and not one who scores a century in less than one in three tests.
If we're going by stats then he's the best test batsman of his era, and arguably better than Sachin, Ponting, Sanga and Lara, though unlike these greats, he never looks dominating to me.
Is this a week era of bowling or is Smith one of the best players of all time?

It's a weak era, full stop
Only Steyn and Anderson in recent years
Starc will get there, i think Boult will too at some point
Others are not great, either careers are too short or they just haven't posed enough consistent threat
I mean I know Herath got tons of wickets, but did he scare anyone really, apart from on dustbowls?

Ajmal had a dodgy action while Ashwin got 90% of his wickets in Asia. In the recent era I would have is:
1) Steyn
2) Anderson
3) Philander
4) Broad
5) Boult
Big game from Steyn and the rest though.

Yeah Amir was never the same. Struggled to swing the ball since his return and now he's called time on test cricket.

Australia - Mitch Johnson?
SA - Steyn
Ind - Zaheer Khan?
Pak - Ajmal
SL - For me it is Ajantha Mendis, some would say Herath, Malinga maybe?
NZ - Bond or Boult?
WI - Jermaine Taylor? No idea who else they've had
