Game Management

This is something Ole will need to improve on drastically. How can the first sub be made near the 80th min, then Greenwood comes on with 2mins left, what was he expecting?

Lingard looked mediocre all game. We dont really have any game changers on the bench, why not throw Mason on earlier.

If you offered me 4 points from 6 after games against Chelsea and Wolves, I would have been very happy. However it should be 6 from 6, that one feels like a defeat.

At least we look a lot more solid defensively, we probably would have lost that game going into the last 20mins last year.

I made a remark in another thread which is relevant here so I'll just copy+paste below. Given the lack of good options in midfield from the bench, I think Ole needs to find ways of using Pogba differently based on what the game calls from. From the other thread:

What I would have liked to have seen Ole do later in the 2nd half was to get Pogba into the game by releasing him a bit more. I'd have brought on Tuanzebe for Lingard, let him anchor midfield and help cover Shaw when Traore was causing problems and had McTominay working B2B and Pogba in his favoured LCM position.

We saw on the one real occasion that he was able to venture into threatening areas he won a penalty.

I completely understand why he wants Pogba getting on the ball deeper, but it would be good to see him adapt that midfield formation later in games when we need something extra in the final third.

Overall I was quite happy. We should have won the game but conceded a superb goal and we finished the match quite strongly. Maguire & AWB make us look very solid and assured at the back.

Game management starts on the pitch, and we had an average age of 24.

Ole doesn't have good options on the bench, this is going to be a recurring theme.

You don't wait til near enough the 80th min to make your first change if you are chasing a goal is my point

We also had to prevent them scoring us

Yup

The performance was decent and I can see what the team is trying to do.

Shame we didn't win but a food result and performance

Your lads looked hungry for it

Yeah similar to how Mancini used Toure late in games. I said on the match thread Ole’s subs were poor. Needed to make changes earlier and get Pogba further forward.

Even if it wasn’t Tuanzebe he should have brought on Periera to allow Pogba to move further forward. Shows how bad our midfield options are that we are discussing this.

I think in reality if Pogba scores that pen, we win and we all say that was a good performance away at arguably the hardest non top 6 team.

he misses and we start picking flaws. to me we competed for 90 mins didn't fade after 60 like last year. the defense looked solid apart from the FK header and then the goal but then again it was a special goal.

its a young team but I do actually look at it and see Ole trying to build something which makes a nice change,

Yea I mean we can argue about which player sits deepest, but I'm not sure it's too important provided Pogba gets further up the field later in the game (and provided it's not Matic!).

I’m not adverse to Pogba playing deeper but I don’t think a game like today was it needed. With the way Wolves defend we need him in and around the box.

Not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but Pogba should be playing as the most advanced and on the left side of three midfielders.

I actually would play him where Lingard played today.

His passing game and shooting ability would make him deadly there.
