Bury FC

I'm literally speechless that a club like Bury FC has less than 48 hours to maintain its survival.

I see bits and pieces on Sky Sports and various other news-related programmes focusing on their plight with half-hearted requests for help but nothing of any substance.

I had to look for something half organised and found a Just Giving page. They've raised just under £3000 against a target of £8 million in two weeks. It wasn't even a Bury fan that started the initiative......

Even as a die-hard Leeds United fan I really don't want to see teams like Bury FC disappear from the football world. Surely there's scope for an initiative to grasp the imagination of Bury and the wider football world that would see Bury FC become a true community club and preserve its future.

Nothing on LinkedIn and I'm not on Facebook.

Fingers crossed a solution appears.

Bolton Wanderers next....

It can be difficult to stomach a club who have been a focal point of the community for 130 years going to the wall over £8 million, when you have players in the same football pyramid being paid £15 million a year.

It’s mirrored in life though, we have those who use food banks then get evicted because the cost of living is too much, then you have Jeff Bezos whose net worth is reported to be $165 billion.

One of the issues for the likes of Bury, Bolton, Wigan, Stockport, Oldham, Macclesfield is the shadow of United and City, especially United.

People from those towns support the two biggest teams in the area, generally, and without fans your club will struggle.

And the ironic fact is that Old Trafford and the Etihad could play to empty stadiums and still be very solvent.

To be fair it often sounds like they are ……….

I’ve said before I wish I could be sorry for clubs in this sit uation but I just can’t.

All I remember is how much bile we got thrown at us when we went into admin.

How much abuse we got.

And how many people wished our club would die.

It’s not like I want them to go out of business or anything, it’s more that I can’t bring myself to feel anything for them over the fact they might.

------------

The emotional investment is huge but even more so in these types of circumstances which are more prevalent than many of us realize, I bet.

Seems the FA/EFL have to come up with a program whereby administrators are appointed by them with a view to keeping the doors open and seeing a transfer of ownership takes place.

Legally this may not be so easy. Ownership is controlled in US professional leagues, but that may be due to their structure as franchises. A good example, if anyone is interested in learning more about this was the forced sale of the LA CLippers in the NBA by Donald Sterling, who had become a persona non grata in the league due to racist statements he had made.

Fingers crossed that the offer to buy the club has actually been accepted now.
