Early days but so far

Okay so its not been going too well as late for Ole has it. As far as this mention of the 4 wins on 16 odd games go, im not paying too much attention to it, as bad as it got at the end of last season, I was willing to let that slip, for Ole to get a good pre season in and with new signings hopefully we would see an improvement.

v Chelsea - Fantastic result - above average performance, could have went either way though with Chelsea chances

v Wolves - Decent result - good away performance, deserved to win

v Palace - Terrible result, poor performance but really should have secured at least the draw

v Saints - Poor result, below average performance, last 15 we had the chances to nick winner

All in all, I have to say I seem to be in a minority in thinking that what I have seen so far this season is an improvement in performance level but unfortunately the results haven't came with it.

Hopefully the results will improve but there is definite improvement in our football, we have a clear way of playing in that we are going with pace and the exuberance of youth, will try to build from the back but not to a point where it becomes ridiculously dangerous, we will try to put on a press and defend high up the pitch, all the new signings have been great, with the usual suspects ie Rashford/Pogba/Lingard lacking consistency, these players really have to step up if we are to see an improvement in league position at the end of the season.

Overall im relatively optimistic that this season will not be as bad as what many expect, I still see us having a fight on our hands for 4th but I think we will be above the likes of Leicester and Everton come the end of season.

To finish though, one thing that I can point the finger at Ole is the timing of his subs, every game this season, especially the Palace and Saints games we were crying out for something from the bench, and Ole seems to leave it to about 70/75 mins before doing something, its the one thing that Ole has me tearing my hair out about.

Also, is there anyone who genuinely thinks we will add quality to the squad in Jan, I have little to no hopes about signing anyone of note in Jan...??

Thoughts...

If anyone can explain to me difference between OGS and Martin ONiells tactics to any great degree Id be surprised. Maybe the midfield set up slightly.

Utd keep shipping goals too.

Ultimately though I think he'll be good for Utd in the long run as will not letting people take this p!ss with transfer fees and wages as much but that takes time.

For one we don't have Emile Heskey upfront...

Secondly, we've dominated possession in all of our games this season...

We don’t sit so deep, with so many behind the ball, relying on crosses and long balls to the big man for headers, knockdowns and flick ons. Strange comparison.

Get it wide cross it in with a very flat back four was more my thinking.

"True but as long as the manager is making mistakes like playing Pogba in a defensive two or making the wrong subs he isn’t helping himself"

Forgot to touch on this point earlier. I think it's a double-edged sword, this Pogba situation. Yes he is our best player and we are not playing him in his best position, but at the same time what we saw in last season's collapse is that when he is taken out of the game (either by the opposition or by his own inconsistencies) the 433 completely kills us creatively.

So yeah, I think I can see the logic behind the formation switch, as in theory it should allow us to get more creativity on the pitch. A big problem is that Ole's shown too much faith in Lingard who, whilst I've always liked, just doesn't have the ability to carry that creative burden in the number 10 role.

Ideally we would have upgraded that central midfield and got a bit more quality in there (still not quite sure why we didnt go for Tielemans) but it's done now. If we were to switch back to 433 I dont think we have the depth or quality in midfield to sustain it through a season. We have 5 CMs - 3 of them are simply not very good and the jury is still very much out on McT.

We have a couple of wild cards in Gomes and Garner who I'm sure we'll see before the end of the season (i hear the former in particular is looking far too good for the U23s at the moment). Might be a season too early though.

But overall I echo Pride's point about Ole. He may not be the right man for the job and may not last long, but as long as his successor isn't another Jose-esque appointment who will tear up everything he's doing, I think he'll stand us in good stead.

Do you think that is what our tactics are?

I think it's getting that way yes. I dont see many overloads, partnerships on the pitch or players vreaking the lines. When there was McTominay won a penalty but all in all a bit one dimensional.

......

It isn't even close to getting that way. We don't have any width on the right hand side for starters.

Ultimately it’s a results game and we should judge the manager on those.

All in all, I have to say I seem to be in a minority in thinking that what I have seen so far this season is an improvement in performance level but unfortunately the results haven't came with it.

------------

From the corresponding games last year... We're 2 points better off

Baby steps... But that's what we need to aim for over the season, improving results in games we dropped points in last year

I'm oddly optimistic.... But I've been in Croatia for the last week, its blazing sunshine and I'm half canned in a harbour side bar

We're going to win the league***

*** not this year obv

I spent 6 months in Trogir, just outside Split. Beautiful country, Croatia

Just don't go inland, still a lot of minefields
