Harry Maguire will come good for us

I'm seeing a lot of rival fans, Especially Liverpool fans slating our defender, I'm not bothered about them to be honest, Harry Maguire is a good defender, He's had a good start to his United career as well, He will become one of our best players before the end of the season, He'll also prove his doubters wrong as well.

You are the fool who thinks spending near 80m on Pepe is a steal.
Pardon me for taking your opinions and wiping my arrse with them

To be fair though it is incredible business on our part and shocking business on yours. To be paying that much you'd expect someone to at least be on par with VVD but he's not in the same class and never will be. He's good in the air and can pass a ball but that's about it. We haven't missed him at all and I think that should be a good indication of his actual quality. We definitely missed Kante until we got Ndidi and we still miss Mahrez but Maguire nah.

Maybe you think I'm a wum or its sour grapes but it's really not, you only have to look at posts on our board from last season to see what Leicester fans think of him.

United fans are touchy about Maguire they know they massively overpaid but the fee need not concern them with their cash.

Does he improve their starting 11? yes.
Is he their best defender? yes.
Could he lace VVD's boots? no
Is he a leader they needed? yes

I suspect we will see the best of him once United can buy another CB that can cover him effectively.

Since when has Maguire been a leader? I never witnessed that at Leicester. He was carried by Evans, it was always Evans or Wes talking to him and telling him where to be. He's not a leader in my opinion.

I’ve got a slightly different perspective as a Leicester City fan. I liked Maguire and wanted to keep him. Admittedly that was partly because I was worried about potential replacements and that’s gone well so far, but it’s early days. People talk about fees, but it’s kind of irrelevant. Manchester United can easily afford £80m and it doesn’t mean anything if he improves the squad. Is he worth that much? Probably not, but the way the market inflates that might look normal in a few years’ time.

I think Maguire has been a little overrated since he got into the England side. Most international games are played without much pressure on the back line and HM will thrive in that environment. He’s very comfortable on the ball and a threat from set pieces. It’s only rare that his weaknesses would be exposed. In a Leicester team that has to defend much more than England do he can look suspect. He can get caught out by the ball played in behind and is slow to react – and hasn’t got the recovery pace to make up for it. I’ll actually miss him at Leicester more for his joining in with midfield and threat at set pieces than I will his defending as that element of his game is more replaceable.

I think it’s actually a fair argument to say he could thrive at United once you have better quality in front of him. He’d look very good in a team that controls possession and dictates the game. That’s why I thought he’d drop into the Man City team more easily – who are currently a step or two ahead in terms of midfield quality.

I don't care about the fee, as I'm not paying it.
Evans is not the equal of VVD as I know watching him at OT, he's good but can get bullied.
Maguire is not a great CB, but he is a good one, and improves our team. People point to his faults, but even Rio had some.

The thing about Evans is he's a better defender, he reads the game better and his positioning is better. He bailed Maguire out a lot last season. When United come up against quick forwards playing a high line Maguire will get exposed because as Joby said he's too slow and he doesn't anticipate the play to get him into the right position. This was evident in Ayew's goal where he failed to read the threat of a flick on and then left Ayew in acres of space. Phil Thompson actually pointed this out, as I said a defender would. Maguire is better than most centre halves in the league but he's not in the same class as VVD.
