The Lovable Alfie

It seems that our Alfie is the darling of many media outlets today.

The perma-raging striker of last season has been nowhere to be seen this year. Instead he has been replaced by a calm and generous player with a much improved disciplinary record who warmly applauds his strike rival scoring a double after he himself is subbed.

I know these numbers aren't exactly right but I heard this on the radio over the weekend and you will get the idea....by this time last season he had been booked something like 7 times and been sent off twice. And he had scored just six goals.

This season he has three yellow cards, no reds and about 13 goals.

The stats show that being the angry man certainly doesn't help his goal scoring.

Now - many sensible Rangers fans pointed out that prior to last season Alfie had never seen red in his career and that last seasons indiscipline was the exception rather than the rule. But some football fans rushed to label Alfie (and his mother) all sorts of horrible things I wont repeat.

And hands up - I for one was happy to see him go in the summer - not because he wasn't a good player - but because he had just become too much of a distraction.

However - SO FAR he has made me eat my words and not only has his discipline improved he is scoring more goals and playing better. Some strikers contribute very little when they are not scoring but you saw what Alfredo can do against Feyenoord on Thursday when he tortured the two CBs without getting a goal.

I am sure Afredo will have his blips along the way as the season goes on. But, as someone who all but wrote him off at Rangers, I think he is due hearty congratulations from all the doubters for the clear progress so far this season.

I am sure all fair minded football fans will agree it is nice to see a young man, far from home, working hard to improve himself and confirm beyond any doubt what a great wee player and all round good guy he is.

Keep up the good work Alfredo.

He ran about a lot.

He bumped into the defenders a lot.

He bullied them...actually 'tortured' them.

How many chances did he create?

How many goals did he score?

He had 5 decent chances and made an utter tool of them.

That's basically his summary v feyenoord.

Top defenders will laugh at that kind of performance.

So nice to know that you get so much enjoyment from watching the famous Rangers

I do....why wouldnt I. We have two world famous and historic football clubs in this country...I'm actually surprised that the level of bigotry in this country stops people enjoying them both.

Have always watched Rangers games on the telly...through thick and thin.

It must be a really tough shift watching Rangers against Feyenoord if you didn’t think Morelos’ personal performance was a highlight of a really good team performance.

If you can’t enjoy Alfie in a game like that then why would you bother watching 😂😂

I really enjoyed watching him. Also enjoyed the sheer incompetence of the feyenoord defence in the first half. Their number 10.
And, as I said before, the raucous atmosphere produced by the rangers fans.
It was a good watch.

He's definitely an asset to rangers and he'll be there for a long time to come.

His main ability seems to be 'bullying defenders'. I'm not actually sure what that really means (although it sounds like fouling) but whatever it means, it wont work if he takes a step up in class. The top guys will just let him run about for a bit and then take the ball off him when it bounces between his left heel and his right ankle.

Although I'm a bit harsh on him, I'm doing it because I want to help and believe that he can become a Rangers legend. Like Terry Hurlock.

I'm an objective judge though and he can improve if he cuts out the comedy stuff.

Last week against feyenoord he blasted two shots into the CR rear, hammered two against the goalie and rattled one into the side netting...and I mean the rear of the side netting....a class finisher would have had at least a hat-trick out of that lot.

He did have one brilliant run and cross to nobody in particular. That was good.

He's definitely growing on me.

If he can improve his composure and decision making then he could be a real top striker. As it stands, he wastes too many opportunities by not even hitting the target, like he can skin three defenders then just panics and blasts it. First touch is occasionally sublime, occasionally awful, he needs a bit of luck like Suarez had when he was at Liverpool - I remember him taking some awful touches and somehow the ball would take 3 ricochets off shins and knees and spin out exactly where he'd wanted it to go.
