To be fair I think religion has done more harm to humanity than people who tell other people there isn’t a god

Religion is the basis of our law and by and large it's not a bad way to live your life.

It’s not religions fault it’s been hijacked by terrorists and paedophiles

Religion has been used to control mass population for centuries - back when slaves were breaking their back working for their masters it was helpful for them to feel there was a better place afterwards.

I don’t care if people believe in god because who knows what is out there. But it should always be something private rather than a way of controlling other people

Its the people that exercise religion and every backwards lifestyle and believe that comes with it. Its a choice of the people. So you can criticise both.

I'm talking about more general criticism of all religious people. A lot of really great people get looked down upon by atheists just because they believe in something that's probably not real.

Even ignoring that though I'm not totally sure I agree with your initial statement. If you genuinely believed that god was saying that you had to do certain things then I can't really blame you for going along with it.
