The managers role

DDG
AWB IRWIN
RIO MAGUIRE
RONALDO KEANE SCHOLES JAMES
ROONEY RVN

Does anyone think that team would be in the same position we are now? Do our three new signings look totally out of place ? Of course AWB hasn't had the career of GN yet, but he may do. Vidic was great, but Torres gave him nightmares.
James isn't as good as Giggs, but few are.

The point I am trying to make is that the quality of the players is foremost in the status of the team.

So evidently assembling a squad the equal of the one above is the number one role of the manager. It takes time, a good scoutin network, backing from the board, and a slice of luck.
Can Ole do it? possibly if his first three signings are an omen.

Coaching. I honestly don't know how much coaching managers do at big clubs. SAF not so much I think, others do a lot. I doubt Ole is a top coach, and I wish he hadn't appointed Phelan, who I think seemed better than he is because of SAF. I would like to see a young , highly rated coach with a modern outlook. A latter day McClaren.

Tactics. The above coach could help enormously. We know SAF listened to his assistants because styles changed as they did. A miss for Ole imo.

Motivation. SAF was the master of this. Every team he put out played with belief, determination, and attacking intent. And they were all fit.
Where does Ole stand on this ? I don't know. Imo we are not fit enough, but I guess we have a fitness coach.
He can't motivate in the SAF style, but there is more than one way to do it. I don't see pep doing the hair dryer treatment.

Ole wants to succeed, become another SAF; Then he has to make changes.
Regarding the players, the most important element I have quite a bit of faith in him. He has moved on players I wanted to see moved on, and brought in three players I think are good enough to be part of a top team.

But he either needs to up his game on tactics and formation, or get someone in who can give him good advice.

He needs to get the fitness coach producing players in better shape, and to look again at the medical team if our injury record doesn't improve.

On motivation I have little to say, because it is hidden, but at least the players seem to like and respect him.

Unless we have a serious decline I would like to see who he brings in in January and next summer.

I'm not a keep Ole at any price man, if he doesn't perform I'll be on here saying he has to go. But if I was a board member it wouldn't be yet.

I believe the insinuations first came from those claiming I told you so regarding Maguire and accusing people of blindly putting trust in ole regarding transfers which has never been displayed

-------------------------------------------------

Sorry but I've gone through this thread and the only person calling people s is you.

Nobody else has insinuated anything remotely like that.

As for smalling you dont know why southgate didn't pick him although I suspect he didn't want an average CB

You also dont know when or what transpired between him and ole during the summer with regards his future in the team. He had obviously moved down the pecking order after lindelofs performances last season and with Maguire coming in.

He has no control over who southgate picks for England but he did have the option of sticking it out at utd and fighting for his place. He chose to leave

Just have and I can't see anything. Maybe copy and paste what was said.

I do. Southgate dropped him over concerns about his ability to play out from the back. He thought there were others who better in this regard. I think this is generally well known by now.

Here's a link:

Smalling would improve that England defence, regardless of his limitations on the ball.

Whatever it was that happened between the pair and whatever the reason for him falling down the pecking order was, I and quite a few other people disagree with it because as we've made it perfectly clear by now, we rate Smallling's defensive ability above all or most of our other CBs.

Yet you all ,well the 3 of you that are here, share the opinion that he is an average CB who I repeat has chosen to jump ship with his averageness and play in Rome.
I doubt anyway that if he was still here our situation would be any different considering there are more glaring problems with this team that have nowt to do with the center of defense.
So forgive me if I dont share the mourning for the departure of Mike or the implied or real accusation being levelled at Ole that it has weakened the squad

I mean how can the departure of an average player, wether by his choice or not , weaken a squad, particularly when he was replaced with a better player.

I have not uttered the word average on this thread.

Stop putting words in people's mouths.

I think Smalling is a good but not great defender, just to clear up any confusion. The same thing could be levelled at Maguire.

No one is claiming Mike is a top defender, simply that he’s the best of a pretty average bunch

Just to clear up the selling players and not replacing them accusation being levelled in general at ole not saying you share the opinion trs

In smallings case he was replaced with a better player in Maguire

I can't speak for mu82, just myself.

We all agree that Smalling should play a more integral part at United but perhaps our opinions differ on how good he actually is.
