going to football in them days could be very iffy

train stations were a nightmare if it went off

i went to watch frank bruno fight joe bugner at the lane and me and my mates went to soho first for a drink.

i lost my mates as i didn't realize they had left the pub and got stuck with a little firm of wolves fans all doing poppers that were going to the fight.

i had it on my toes and knew i'd find my mates in tottenham,i went to piccadilly circus to get the tube and there was a mob of about 60 derby fans singing when out of nowhere about 30 pompey fans came on to the platform and battered derby

don't miss them things to be honest

Nope same here mate, they were dark days. Whilst I have a little chuckle at one or two of the minor things that happened in those days, in general the hooliganism problem blighted the game. Nonsense you should have to be on the lookout for trouble just by going to a football match.

So much better now, and a throwback to when I first started to go to football, able to chat to opposition fans walking down Tottenham High Road, the usual suspects aside.

We r 100% was part of the Y*d army firm back in the day

I myself distanced myself from them, although I knew a few of the boys in the mid to late 1960s, when it first all started up, then it gradualy escalated into the 1970s and 1980s.

The closest I got was on the North Bank at Arsenal in 1965, when the Spurs lot and Arsenal lot were both pulling on my scarf to see who could get hold of it. Unfortunately it was still around my neck.

In the old days you could just rock up at an away ground, and go wherever you wanted. It was first come, first served. We all used to mix very amiably, early sixties, then it started to get hairy during the 70s, so you had to be more careful where you stood. I often used to stand with the home fans when I went away during the 70s and 80s, it was usually trouble free if you kept yourself to yourself.

My parents were first generation hippies. Were you able to enjoy this period of being carefree.
I mention this because I was big into the rave scene late 80's/early 90's and it was well known during this time that a lot of rival fans would be in the clubs and parties like brothers in arms.
My experience of hooliganism was only during the 90's when admittedly was the only time I was a regular attendee at White Hart Lane and even then there were intimidating experiences. Had friends that were heavily involved (remember that mentioning of the White Hart in Southgate?) but after a little taste I knew it would never be for me however much my ego got in the way. Would've only ended up with me in jail or hospital or worse. My friends who I grew up with had no fear, but violence never turned me on.

I was a teenager during the 60s, and had just turned 21 when the decade ended, so will leave it to you to figure out my lifestyle back then.

Good man though for steering clear of the violence.
