VAR before there was VAR

I was watching the Porto v Monaco highlights and the outcome of that game might have been totally different if VAR actually existed back then. The number of incorrect offside calls was ridiculous!

VAR definitely needs to be improved but it's more about the rules and (lack of) common sense implemented by the officials as opposed to the technology itself.

SO i also have no faith that a meeting is suddenly going to make it work.

Nobody said this.

I am pro VAR and the fact that they are meeting means they admit there's a problem, which is the first step.

As a pro VAR person who was losing hope in VAR, this gives me a reason to remain optimistic that VAR can be massively improved. You've actually suggested some good changes which are in the mainstream so I hope they will consider them but nobody thinks one meeting will resolve all issues.

The Lovren incident is a great example of the flaws in VAR.

Some fans will insist it was correct, some fans will insist otherwise. VAR won’t solve anything in that respect.

You are sure it won't work no matter how it's implemented.

---

Not quite. I'm sure it will have a sum negative impact on the game (my opinion) however it is implemented. To be fair I haven't seen anything that would give me faith in the governing bodies to implement it in a way that mitigates those effects.

So will it work or not? If you think it'll have a negative sum impact then that means you think it won't work. You can't think both these things at the same time.

They will persist with it even if some people think its not working. Whether it works is a subjective issue and in your opinion it won't work no matter how its implemented.

You contradicted yourself immediately and actually you agree with me.

As you point out, kinda, It depends on the criteria for success. The way I see it, it can objectively 'work' by reducing errors in referring decisions. Subjectively, I don't think it'll improve the game at all. So no, it'll likely never 'work' for me.

Its not VARs job to solve that and that doesn't even need solving IMO. Its always been like that even before VAR.

The intention of VAR is to reduce ref errors not to improve the game in regards to subjectivity so even by your logic it will (could) work.

I didn’t say it was.

What I’m saying is that lots of people believe VAR will lead to the correct decision being made.

The problem with that is that not everyone agrees what the correct decision is.

I am 100% against VAR and always have been despite most on here arguing in favour of it a year or so ago.

Mistakes are a part of the game, managers make them, players make them and refs and linos make them, its life.

This obsession by some to live in a perfect world compounded by the current obsession with IT is a marriage made in hell IMO.

The powers that be will not be content until computers run our lives from the minute we wake up to the minute we go to sleep, this will be done by our smartphones telling us when to go to bed of course.

VAR, speed cameras, smart motorways they are all part of it, I dont want to live in a nanny state with computers telling me how to live and I dont want to see the sport I love ruined yes RUINED because of the IT obsession.

Eventually every single decision on the pitch will be controlled by cameras and that will be the death of football and the fun it brings.

The "perfect brigade" have already outlawed tackling and virtually eradicated it from the game and before we know it the game will be under head height in case heading the ball causes long term problems.

Leave the facking game alone its the most watched and most popular team game on the planet so stop facking about with it and maybe it will stay that way.
