I keep hearing this statement from pundits, coaches etc and it does my head in.
52 goals 23 Assists, Give those stats to Sterling, Mane,Salah, Firminho or any other footballer other than Messi and Ronaldo and the Ballon d'Or race is a no contest. If you accept that Liverpool and City are better teams than Barca then Messi gets those stats playing for probably the worst Barca team for 12 years but people still moan.
No doubt Ronaldo was shafted last season as Modric won what was essentially the anything but Ronaldo & Messi vote but is this how we are going to treat this award until both players retire? Modric proved this season he was never the worlds best player at any point by not even getting a nomination for this years award, the first player to achieve this dishonour.
Why are we so obsessed with lowering the standard so that someone else can win it?
van Dijk will be a worthy winner if he gets the prize this evening as he is a class player who has been above his peers, but to pretend as if he will be shafted if Messi wins the award is just ignorant and stupid on the part of some fans.
Ballon d'Or: van Dijk deserves it?

Nothing to do with being defensive. I just think the act of requesting people bookmark and reference their knowledge of the game is weird.
I provided a perfectly acceptable basis - you simply reject the notion that being an avid follower of the game is enough.
I can say with certainty that Ferguson is a great premier league manager without referencing his accolades.
