Thoughts from the away end

Was at the game last night, just a few take aways I’ll put forward.

Was down at the front near the corner flag so saw the whole Fred thing. I have to admit, I didn’t hear / see any racism but obviously have seen the video now which is a disgrace. The other thing for me was the amount of objects thrown at Fred - was at least 3 or 4. Those lads should be banned no question. A couple of city fans on the the other side of the divide even got ejected by stewards for fighting with each other. Was brilliant to see the little berties implode I have to say.

The game - What a performance. The lads did us proud out there. Everyone to a man gave his all. The thing that me and the lads I was with talked about - Pogba, Lukaku, Sanchez - there is no chance those players either put in a shift like that nor care enough to do so. And, we can play at that level without them. I’d happily see the back of Pogba provided Real stump up the cash so it can be re-invested into a younger hungrier couple of players who actually want to play for the badge and not themselves!

Ole - I said it before the match - I’ll say it again now. I like what he’s trying to achieve with the squad. I firmly believe we are 3/4 quality signings away from being a very good side. Plus the youngsters coming through is a massive part of being a United fan to me, so hats off to him for that. I think Tuanzebe, Williams, Garner, Greenwood will all be part of the first team going forwards which is a great return from the academy. Ole deserves this season at the very bare minimum.

Players - AWB was phenomenal, can’t remember the last time I saw such a good defensive performance from a united player. Fred has proved us all wrong, where has this player been? Rashford is turning into a really top forward and terrifies defenders. James has been a fantastic signing for the money paid. And lastly big Scott McTominay, this guy will be united captain in a few years mark my words - outstanding mentality for a youngster.

Atmosphere - being in the away end is always amazing, but a night like last night lives long in the memory, and it’s fair to say I’ve lost my voice this morning. Celebrating with the players at the end is what it’s all about.

I have no problems with you taking three points from us, and remember the days well where our biggest game of the season was the derby with dreams of a domestic cup final 😜

Of course you have a problem with it. It puts the kybosh on your chances of catching Liverpool.
Of course you care about domestic cup finals, because you don't play in any other kind. And two of them featured in your treble.
Still, better to pu a brave face on it than crying.

My only gripe with OP is the suggestion that Fred proved us ALL wrong... A few were calling for the guy to get a run of games.

Hopefully he starts getting a warmer reception at home games...

Concerning Lingard's contributions (not stats) I reckon if you interview defenders who play against us, they'd rate Jesse a proper nightmare with his running. You either mark him, which frees up Anthony or Marcus or hope he doesn't get a scoring chance. Pogba at 10 has technique but doesn't do anywhere near the amount of running Jesse does. Both of their contributions have merit, but who causes more damage? Pogs needs to move on, but maybe he'll put in some worldy's for us before he leaves?

Exactly. People tend to focus on Lingards defensive play or the link up between midfield and attack. What they often miss is the movement and runs he makes of the ball. He is a very intelligent footballer and reads the game very well. It's exactly why he finds himself with the ball in so many great positions and also creates space for those around him. Defenders struggle with that. It's a shame he isn't as clinical, if he converted 10% of the chances that he created from his own movement then people would not be complaining about him.

Haha... A couple of good games and he's Lionel Jesse again 😂.

I quite like Jesse but he's not in the same league as Pogba... Can't believe anyone's even comparing

This is really laughable, in your defence of a bang average player you really confirm his runs are pointless, no goals and no assists and no chances created, how does he disrupt play when even city’s centre backs were camped in our half. And those comparing him to Ji Sung Park just stop it, not even close and terms of quality and effectiveness and Park actually won tackles no just run around d midfield and look busy with zero end product.

Yeah I'd go along with that. When an attacking player's greatest attribute is his off the ball running, he generally isn't a great attacking player. It tends to be a defence for poor statistics. No offence Emile!

You know Jesse has scored more goals in less games than JSP did?

You know that pass by pogba for Rashfords goal at spurs last year... Who was playing am and won and fed him the ball?

I loved JSP.... But the role Ole has used Jesse in big games is exactly the role Fergie used Park in certain games (against pirlo for example)... And to say his end product was far better, well he shades it overall on assists but not by much and in a lot more appearances

We get it... You don't like Jesse... No biggie... He can't spray the ball about like pogba, can't create like pogba... No argument

But pogba doesn't and couldn't do the role Jesse was asked to yesterday... And first half that was key to us winning

They're totally different players who play totally different roles

Put pogba in our side yesterday instead of Jesse and we have to have a totally different game plan

I think the important point is (and a few people mentioned it) is that Pogba has to completely buy into what Ole is trying to do. If not he can do one. I'd rather have a fully committed Jesse Lingard, than a half in half out Pogba, with one eye on Madrid constantly. Pogba is not that good that he needs to be pandered to. Besides in the event that Pogba left, I would imagine we would buy a replacement rather than leave Jesse as our creative force.
