Wigan Athletic 1 - 1 Derby County

Wigan v Derby County
Near Asda
Wigan

26 Dec 2019

After the festivities of yesterday, the jollities continue today in the the rugby league citadel of Wigan.

Derby still have a woeful away record but even if the lose today, over 80% of The Faithful remain steadfastly loyal to our current management incumbent.

Malone is out after his dubious red card but we just don't have the energy to protest. Max Lowe will start. Wigan who are also below us with an even worse record look to improve their standing.

So, guess the outcome?

Team news:-

Hamer
Forsyth
Bielik
Waghorn
Lawrence
Martin
Holmes
Lowe
Davies(C)
Bogle
Knight

Subs: Roos, Wisdom, Dowell, Marriott, Bird, Sibley, Whittaker.

Leicester v Liverpool is a bit easier on the eye.

So, Jayden Bogle (19) has got another 2 years to mature & get to the same level as Trent A-A ?

Easy. Plus he'll have had the added bonus of having to play with teammates that occasionally go off on a jolly.

Would be nice if someone ahead of him could hold that position down n the two could develop an understanding.

He’s not the player we miss most but Bennett and Bogle worked pretty well together. From his recent form I would cash in on Bogle if decent money is offered. Wisdom is better defensively and Bogle keeps looking as though he might do something further forward without ever achieving it.

Exactly what I've been thinking! It's a problem across the pitch due to chop and change. Personally think Bogle and Holmes should link up on the right.

Today I thought we would have been better with Holmes on the right and Knight central rather than the other way around. So hard to build understandings though with players out injured all the time.

I've been of the impression that Knight was more of a central midfielder , considered it an error by SkySports when it suggested Knight was playing on the wing.

We certainly are shooting ourselves in the foot with tactical decisions. Our defence is weak, proven by the number of goals leaked in and the fact we're currently playing two guys who haven't played any football in the last 12 months. Either we get Wisdom in central defence or switch to a 5 man defence with wing backs and Bielik in the sweeper role.

Holmes last season was a player I really, really liked. Harsh to criticise him alone when so many have been poor. I just don't understand why he's sometimes selected to play as a no.10 or as a CM in a 4231 formation. He should be on the wing or playing in CM if we're using 433 - but that's my opinion. I'd prefer his energy on the wing and he's disciplined to track back and help Bogle hence there could be decent partnership potential there.

We really do need to be playing with two up front when playing a three man defence. Against Charlton we should have Marriott and one of Martin / Marriott playing alongside him.

The balance of our team and the type of personalities on the field makes me edgy. We definitely require a captain who can inspire and put the shift in. I've said this a few years ago but our club lacks a wind up merchant type player that p. isses off the opposition's squad and fans. Jamie Ward was the last good player who could put in a performance and wind players up. We definitely lack that in this side, thought Paterson could have been it but not to be.

Here's hoping we address a few of the issues and manage to get a home win verses Charlton.

Holmes ended up on the left at one point towards the end of the first half, mind you we were generally "all over the place" at the time.

I feel sorry for regulars who watch us week in week out. I've only been to three away games and boy have we been bad.

I do wonder about Sibley n Knight though on the periphery of the 4-2-3-1 play them very narrow and encourage Lowe n Bogle to bomb on ahead of them if need be. Maybe in the absence of TL.

Bogle....Davies....Clarke.....Lowe

.............Martin/Swing Low............

Holmes is frustrating, he's a utility player, possibly a confidence one too but I do wonder if we could find him a regular position, if he'd blossom. I presume Charlton will play the 3 at the back that destroyed us last time round. N 2 up front is useful here starving the wing backs of supply with some good ole jumpers for goal posts, high pressing.
