It's been frustrating , if not comical watching us insisting on building up slowly ( and I do mean SLOWLY ) from our backline.
DDG rolls it out to Lindelof and Maguire who always looks half asleep when he has the ball on his feet , they play sideway passes to each other and to the fullbacks, Fred and Matic would then get involved and forced to go back to the CBs and ultimately the keeper would end up hoofing it up.
We don't seem to play with any urgency whatsoever , except when we're desperately chasing an equalizer in the dying moments of a match.
This has to change.
Playing out from deep

It is frustrating. Though it's been a problem that pre-dates Ole. Our centre backs of played piggy in the middle with the invisible Man for years. As someone earlier pointed out, a big issue is that there isn't a midfielder showing and willing, able to receive the ball and transition us into an attacking area. So it goes back to the keeper, hoofed up field and nobody at the other end of the pitch is capable of holding the ball up and bringing others into play. So we lose the ball.

This is the problem. We don't have the players to play long or short.
Some better movement in front of the defense looking for the ball would be nice.

Yes we should play it ‘mid’ seeing we can’t do long or short....

It's all Pep's fault. Nobody did it till he arrived then everybody was at it. If you aren't super sharp it leads to disaster. As a fan it's hard to watch. Even City who are way the best at it, cause me mountains of anxiety watching it. It has great benefits but it's fecking hard to watch sometimes.

no one midfield is comfortable to take the ball from any of the defenders in a tight space, not only that the defenders don't trust any of the midfielders to take the ball in a tight space and keep it so refuse to pass even a semi risky ball to them most of the time, we have so many midfielders who lack close control its laughable

There's definitely more to it than needing better players.
As it is, the players in front of the ball don't offer themselves often enough. We're not very good at creating space and good angles for a pass and this isn't just in midfield, this is all over the pitch which is one of the reasons why we find it hard to play progressively through teams on the ground.
It's a fundamental issue with our build up.

Given our forwards and their aerial ability... The weakness in playing with their backs to goal
What approach do you suggest... Given that a more direct approach will likely see us just give the ball directly to the opposition again

Martial plays really well with his back to goal, just with the ball on the floor.
One of our biggest issues is that our midfield simply can't see a forward pass. So often players ask for the ball yo feet and Lindelof, Fred, Shaw, AWB, Pereira etc just look wide or backwards.
When we do give the ball forwards, quickly and into feet, the forwards play some nice stuff.

Shaw and awb are terrible attackers. We really miss the added dimension good fullbacks can add with those two in the team.

Also, playing with a single instead of double pivot in midfield might help. The deepest midfielder can drop back between the centre backs.
