Henderson

Romero doing brilliant for us and having De Gea, we need to consider the future of Henderson. He is having a brilliant seaon with Sheffield United. He is a supremely confident keeper with a bright future. He's too good to be a 3rd back up.

I think we should look to set him up to be our future number one and maybe cash in on De Gea. He is better in the air and can stop shots with a better.

I think we made another cooock up giving DDG a vastly improved contract when he didn’t really deserve it (and no other clubs seemed to be in for him)

So it would appear we have another player, potentially on the decline signed up to a fat contract who will probably be staying here for the next few years and the likes of Henderson will possibly/probably have to leave to get first team football and not just on loan as I doubt Henderson wants to be on loan for another 4/5 years

We might manage to ship DDG at the right time, but we may end up losing out financially because of that deal (which I agree was questionable). Best case scenario he has a fantastic few months with lots of YouTube saves in the period just before the management decides it's time to rejuvenate the position.

Can see the same for Pogba when no other clubs are interested in a plus 100m bid. He’ll deserve it even less.

I wouldn’t be against having a pairing of Romero and Henderson taking turns to play a part in the club’s future.

I do feel that Henderson has developed good enough to not be wasted as a number 3 goal keeper at United.

And it has gradually coincided with a growing concern for errors built up during DDG’s past 18/24 months.

But trying to shift a keeper who is still quality but has regressed somewhat and is on mammoth wages, while with some years left on his contract is going to be almost an impossible task in this current climate.

If anything, I guess we are blessed to have the 3 most assured goal keepers in football as a whole, despite all the issues we have in the outfield squad. And none of them deserve to be back ups for us tbf.

I’d be a bit gutted if Romero left. I’d feel a big void has been left and needs to filled if DDG left, despite all of his problems, and I’d feel gutted if we let a good prospect like Henderson to leave. But I can’t see us keeping all 3 for long, if and when Henderson’s loan deal expires.

I know it's heretical but I've never quite valued DDG or taken to him on a supporter-player level in the way I did with Schmeichel or VDS. Not just because of the errors that have crept in (and haunted him at the start), but the lack of presence and personality, the lack of proactivity. Also not up there with the best modern keepers with the ball at his feet. Undoubtedly a fine keeper and one of our best players during the dark ages though.

That’s pretty much how I’ve felt and why I really don’t think had that fax machine suddenly worked that day I’d have been to sad about him going

Loan him again for another season.

I agree.

Way too early to start writing off De Gea at 29 years old.

If he continues to make costly mistakes next season and Henderson has another stormer then we have a decision to make.

The crazy thing is De Gea probably has another decade in him at 29. I don't think that we even signed Schmeichel until he was 28.

Agree with the OP...

I'd have Henderson and Romero vie for the no. 1 and moving De Gea along.

I personally have lost almost all confidence in De Gea...

The worst thing about the fax machine transfer would have been losing him without a chance to replace, underscoring a perception that United were a declining team that could be pushed around. (Not that we particularly rose from the ashes after that of course!)

Weren’t we going to get Navas from Real in return? Who the story goes was weeping on the medical trolley at the thought of joining us instead of staying with a Real side he won 4 CL trophies with 🤣

Or do you mean not replacing him with someone we wanted rather than a forced swap deal ?
