Southampton v Wolves Preview

Date: Saturday 18th January
Venue: St Mary’s
Kick off time: 15.00

On Saturday Wolves travel to the south coast to take on Southampton.

In their previous league game last Saturday, Wolves recorded a disappointing 1-1 draw at home against Newcastle.
For their part, on the same day, Southampton played second placed Leicester at the King Power Stadium and came away with 3 points after an impressive 2-1 win.

Although still hanging on to their 7th place in the league table, Wolves have not been getting the points they would have wished for recently with 2 losses preceding last week’s draw.
Conversely, Saints have taken an impressive 13 points from their last 5 league games, a run which is more impressive when you consider that 9 of those points were at the expense of Tottenham, Chelsea and Leicester.

In the reverse fixture in October, the game finished all square at 1-1.
Saints have had a full week to recover from their last game whereas Wolves have not been so lucky. Forced to play an FA Cup replay at Old Trafford on Wednesday Nuno’s wolfpack are once again in their, now familiar, 3 games per week scenario. This, coupled with the home advantage must make Southampton favourites for this game.

For the mid-week game against Man U, Nuno decided to go with his strongest 11 but despite that Wolves still came away from Old Trafford empty handed. As a result Nuno may be forced into making changes for this game. With Willy Boly and Diogo Jota still not available, Ruben Vinagre out with a hamstring injury he picked up on Wednesday and no new signings forthcoming, his options are severly limited

Gem’s prediction: 1-1

Not a good time for us to play the Saints as they will be full of confidence while we are struggling for results and showing that even with just two first teamers injured we become a much weaker team.

Having said that, they haven’t suddenly become world beaters and we haven’t suddenly become useless. We are above them in the league and I’d be confident in saying that will still be the case at the end of the season

Well, if we do not sign some players soon, one injury and we are down to the bare bones.
Better get my boots out, even at 75.

By the way Ruddy was outstanding on Wednesday so perhaps we should keep him on for another year,

Ruddy was very good on Wednesday. And Will Norris evidently doing very well on his loan at Ipswich. We would do well to find better keepers for next season that would be prepared to sit on the bench most games

Can we not we nick Ings off them before tomorrow?

We were poor at their place last season, and the fixture at home earlier this season was pretty dire as I recall. Gotta love a bloke called Herr Hassenhuttl though, takes me back to O level German lessons.

With Vinagre picking up a hamstring injury, Wolves are recalling Ryan Giles from his loan at Shrewsbury. He has been outstanding for them on his loan and probably has mixed feelings about being recalled just before Shrewsbury’s biggest game in many years when they face Liverpool in the 4th round of the FA Cup

I think it's very unfortunate for Ryan Giles to get recalled. Surely Jordan Graham could have done a job for the first team? From what I've seen he has been one of the better players in the U23 squad.

When we played Braga early in the season they were really struggling and in a relegation position so it was a surprise we didn’t beat them. But they have been in great form since and tonight won away at 2nd placed Porto to move up to 5th

they had a good forward who looked as he might suit us
