That’s because it’s (another) pointless, hypothetical question. Do you think the powers that be at United thought, in May 2013, “Well, that’s us fighting for fourth now until 2023 at the earliest - nothing we can do about it”?

Any number anyone gives you is likely to be completely arbitrary. Whether it is three years, or five years, or seven years, or twenty-seven years after Sir Alex, there is no excuse for us to be in the mess we’re currently in, and have been gravitating towards for most or all of those seven years. As I’ve said, we couldn’t (really) have stooped Liverpool and City improving drastically but this did NOT mean we had to decline equally drastically ourselves.

Nearly every signing we’ve made since 2013 has failed to kick on as a top PL/United player. Even if that’s just the managers’ faults, surely you also have to question the people hiring them and working with them? Those managers were all sacked, as Ole probably will be too before May. Why not question the decision-makers above them?

You keep using these City and Liverpool “Renaissances” as if they happened by accident and we were just unlucky that it was someone else’s go.
