Derby County 1 - 1 Fulham

Derby County v Fulham
Pride Park
Derby

1945 Friday 21 Feb 2020

Never dull is any association with Derby County as we make the nationals again as RD, well, I can't say made a mistake but managed to be party to a racist slur to a group of our young players. It's the elephant in the room as far as RD go but thankfully our manager has made his feelings known. Others? They just don't get it. Oh well.

After a bright passage of games, The Rams were back to their stereotypical struggle to break down lowly teams and perhaps were lucky to escape with a draw against Huddersfield. We looked bright on occasion but struggled to excite.

Our creative spark Holmes us now out which is a blow - he really seemed to be asserting himself and looking good value for money. The smart money is on Knight to replace him but when has smart money had a say?

Hamer is expected to be back - Roos kept us in the game last week but also didn't cover himself in glory for their goal. Will we get Wisdom back at CB and Forsyth to stay at full back?

As the season just trundles to its climax, I think we'll just put this down to experience and look forward to renewing our season tickets for 2020-2021.

Team news from Ang 'cos I said so.

There was a keen young lad called Sibley sitting on the bench as well 🤔

Whittaker played for the u23s in the afternoon and showed why he wasn't on the bench. He hardly set the game alight

Didn't think Martin had a great game against udders so I can see why he was left out. Actually I would have considered being a bit more revolutionary and playing Martin as the second central defender, someone with the strength to take on Mitrovitch. A bit Nigel Clough I know. When we pass it round the back Davies's distribution gives me palpitations. He nearly gave them a goal in the first half.

I agree with Rameses about Sibley and Whittaker being the better options.

Whittaker hasn’t looked ready to me but at least he might get better with time. Zoon won’t. If we still had Bennett he would have been a good option. Of course if Zoon had connected properly it would have been a genius masterstroke of a substitution. The chance wasn’t quite as simple as it first looked. If Zoon had been a foot or two further back maybe he would have been able to finish it and then we would be having a very different take on it.

It wasn't easy but definitely a bit better than a half chance. In the event he was no near connecting.

Another incident, had Lawrence not connected with Rooney's pass in the first half Waghorn was in a better position to score. Just shows the fine margins and vicissitudes in a game of football.

The strange thing with Zoon is that when a few of our players were quizzed on the most skilful player at the club, they all said Josefzoon! They also all said that the least skilful was Davies. With Zoon it’s all in his head. If he didn’t think he could connect properly then he could have taken a touch and passed it into the corner. Like Shankly used to say, if you aren’t sure what to do then just stick it in the net and we’ll talk about it afterwards.

Not seen the replays yet, but I did wonder why it was Zoon who found himself in that position rather than Marriott ? 🤔

From memory Marriott had made a run down the right channel in the buildup. I suppose we could credit Zoon for getting into that position, if we are feeling generous.

I have suggested Martin playing centre half before to my sons, they laughed at that idea. They don't know as much as you and I eh Spart? I think he would do well there, he is good at defending corners.

I would have put Martin and Marriott up front, we need to attack more. Fulham did better when they went more positive.

Coco was about to bring Boyle on but then they scored and the plan changed.
