Just seen the Phelan thread below and thought I'd ask people about the role of Michael Carrick.
Now I may get stick from some quarters but I'm a bit meh on carrick as a player. Imo (and it is simply my opinion) I think Carrick was a player who given room had a skillset but under pressure he simply wasn't good enough. Overall he was not someone I would name as a player in my 11.
As a person next to Ole I don't see what he brings to the staff. I just don't see what he brings to the backroom staff. And feel Ole would benefit from someone who didn't sit there looking bored and I do think his role is never discussed with regards to where we currently are.
Thoughts?
Michael Carrick

Isn't it the other coach Steve who plays the biggest role in coaching the players?

I am more inclined to think Carrick is a bigger issue than Phelan.
Whilst Carrick was a good player for us he was never a great one.
I never liked his backing off of players when being ran at and it is something our midfield still tend to do.
I have always been of the opinion that the best way to get the ball back off the opposition is to take it off them and not shadow them until they give it away.

I pretty much agree with you VC.
I used to watch Carrick at spurs and am sure he would come forward with the ball more. For us he never really did this against the better teams and looked scared to try anything. Pressing him made him panic or so it seemed.
Now I simply don't see anything from him in the dugout. And like you I see him as more of an issue than Phelan. But not a lot gets said about him
Just to add I do accept I maybe being unfair as he has no experience from what I know, but then even that is an issue when you consider oles previous experience. I mean even pep to city was a long term plan with city bringing in pretty much all his backroom staff from his Barca days before appointing pep.
Just feel Ole should have been surrounded by more experienced staff than a novice like carrick

Steve 😄
I meant Kieran Mckenna.
Talk (without quotes) in the media that players aren't happy with his basic methods.

As a player I rate him about half way between Henderson and Pirlo. But as a coach I’m not sure what his use or role is.
That’s not to say he isn’t doing a good job, I just have no idea what his role in the club is. Is he just doing his apprenticeship with us whilst getting his badges?

Ffs, people seem to think that the most important parts of the roles of the assistant manager and first team coaches are jumping up and down on the touch lines and screaming at everyone when things aren’t going well.
Absolutely clueless.
How many tactical meetings have you sat in on, OP? How many tactical sessions with the players? How many training sessions have you observed, start to finish?
What is wrong with people? This kind of utter shyyte really does my head in, sorry.

They can sit on the bench reading a newspaper for all I care. But when there is a lack of attacking cohesion a year on, then someone isn't doing their job properly.

Possibly. Possibly there are deeper issues with the squad cohesion, physical conditioning, team culture. But even if it's a purely coaching issue, we don't know enough about the respective coaches' roles or how they are fulfilling them to attribute individual blame.

Yes, but I doubt Carrick is to blame as he is the most rookie of the coaches.

We can only speculate on the quality of our coaching staff, simply put we've no idea how good these people are.
What we do know is that Carrick and Ole are inexperienced at this level and that Phelan won titles under the best manager in history.
What i do know, is everybody complained about our style if play even under Fergie in the phelan years.
