3 4 3 to accommodate Alonso?

Well it seems like a crazy headline really and from an alternate universe, but we appear more defensively solid in a 3 4 3 formation and given the lack of goals in the team, Alonso is a real bonus.

Playing a more expansive game when we dont take our chances and are more open defensively has not been paying off. Until we have the players fit and available that can cash in on a more attacking style of play, it seems a bit pointless playing that way.

Think the moral of today is we look better defensively vs. a team with no recognized striker. Yay us

But addressing the article, we only look comfortable playing 343/352 this season vs. teams that don't attempt to press our 3 CB's. The PL's caught onto the fact that's how you disrupt the passing patterns of a back three system (except dinosaur tacticians like Mourinho), and we don't have any CB's you feel completely comfortable with playing through pressure against a team that know what they're doing. Passing without pressure yes, Christensen's great with the ball, Azpl, Rudiger & Tomori can all get by (Zouma not so much lol), but playing through pressure all are prone to struggle.

Back threes aren't the answer this season, but they're a good tool to utilize against specific opposition because we have players like Alonso

I think it is the formation which protects the deficiencies in our squad the most.

Azpi can only play well at RCB now. Christensen is too fragile to play in a back two. We have no viable left-back option, but we do have a decent wingback in Alonso. Having three centre-backs gives us slightly more protection defending transitions (especially when you have a midfield of Kova and Jorginho), as well as more height to defend corners.

I don’t think we have an alternative at the moment unless Lampard changes his approach to games.

Yup agree with all of that. Until the end of the season this is the way to go.
