So we are now officially in our dip

What started as a frustrating loss to Athletico has continued with deserved defeats to Watford and Chelsea today.

Bournemouth has now become the biggest game of our season!

No one is covering themselves in glory and those that use to berate Henderson are hoping he is back soon!

The team has to be imo

Allison
TAA gomes virgil Robertson
Wij milner ox
Salah firmino mane

Fabinho has been shocking and we are conceding goals all over the shop with him back in the anchor role. We really need some fight and are getting out fought which is the biggest dissapointment.

Bournemouth only play one way so i think the above team and formation should be ok, otherwise I would be tempted to change the formation.

for me people need to focus more on what the players are doing rather than who the players are

we started well for 5 mins then we piled everyone forward and they completely out manned our midfield.

that simple. we need actual midfielders who can stay with play not people who run 15 yards in advance of the ball and leave the cbs exposed to simple press.

look how two players should kill our game.

compare to city where you.can press with 4 and they will walk past you.

everyone going too far up too soon.

Poor show, but at least the team played better than at Watford, although that wouldn’t have been too difficult. Out-played, out-passed by Chelsea, full marks to them, they more than deserved the win, there didn’t appear any cohesion, no plan, and, surely there must have been a plan then it wasn’t followed.

I thought Neco Williams had a good game, Takumi showed some deft passing, Curtis tried his best to get into the game but was heavily marked. Adrian too, despite his howler for their first played well. Neither Gomez nor Robby shined.

For me, our recent defensive problems all stem from an ineffective midfield. Time and time again Fabinho, our deepest lying player, is caught out way ahead of the ball every time we lose it and the defence is being exposed.

As for our attack, well last night was better than against Watford, at least in the first half where we did create a number of decent chances. But we were let down by poor finishing and some decent goal keeping. The second half was a concern for me, we did nothing, created little and probably should have conceded at least 2 more goals. What the games against Madrid, Watford and Chelsea have shown is that, unlike before the mid season break, we don't look like we're going to recover from going a goal behind. It's not that we're panicking, it's that we're not creating anything.

For me its this simple:

Yes williams did ok. it was a learning experience for him. We cannot expect any more but he did well defensively.

Yes minamino did alright, in patches. not brilliant. tough to do well in such poor shape of team.

The issue for me is this.

Compare and contrast the set ups. We started ok but pretty quickly we saw lallana and jones move further and further forward. They are then out of the midfield battle and we see the chelsea three utterly dominate. easy to do when you are out manning fabinho.

Was jones an lw or lcm? what was lallana at? had to know.

we left gomez and vvd alone and parked the full backs massively high up the park and the two mdfielders moved 15 yards in advance of the ball too. It was really easy to then press the two cbs and they ended up playing 40 yard balls not passes. This says a genuine lack of control of the game in effect.

When you have so many bodies in the zones where mane would like he was ending up parked at RW wide and negated. especially second half. origi was muck, so easy to defend so that killed the attack

its easy to go 2 banks of 4 when whe have 6 up field standing about and no interchange happening.

then the team starts playing 50% balls not 100% balls to try start something and lose it more and ge tmore issues.

there was one break from a corner yesterday where in previous times the right ball was to play to mane the 100% on pass to break quick but we played it forward aimlessly 20 yards ahead of salah rushing the break and the ball was instantly lost. Thats just one example.

Their first goal was an absolute flog by playing a lax ball to williams who then went negative and played it to gomez wo was not on who then instead of pumping it played it to fabinho who wasn't ready and he loses it and then still adrian shoudl have saved it.

This is happening far too often.

Then the second goal was jones basically messing up in his positioning and body not being aware of player coming on. Then vvd messes up royally by heading down and then its a break and fabinhos lack of legs is exposed. williams came over but he should have made a tackle to at least force barkely to go to the left side. Fabinho was on a card as he had a chance to kick the guy but didn't. Again its clear too many bodies piling on and exposing the back line.

Every time we do it we will the front 3 as we put midfielders who shoudl be picking passes in the areas where the front 3 need to be moving into.

Yep, the issue seems to be the midfield...since Hendo's absence and Fab's return.
