Contribution of academy players

Among PL clubs we currently lead the way for:

- proportion of goals scored by academy graduates (55.8%)
- total number of goals scored by academy graduates (24)
- number of academy graduates who have scored goals (5)

Some thoughts about this in random order:

- These stats would be even better if Lingard had enjoyed his annual three-match purple patch. And Chong has come close a few times without quite putting the ball in the net.
- Apart from the gratifying aspect of being true to our club's traditions, I think this bodes well for the future. It indicates we have a core of players who are young and likely to improve (and Andreas Pereira). Most of the very most successful clubs sides I can think of have benefited from the cohesion they derived from having a core of committed, talented players who don't want to play anywhere else. The importance of such players to a winning club culture can't be underestimated. It doesn't have to rely on academy players but a core of players who have an affinity with the club and each other has to be a positive thing.
- Credit to Lampard's Chelsea, who are pushing us close in second place.
- I wonder which team with a lavishly funded academy is bottle of the table?
- Hippo, wherever he is, must be ever so proud.

Arsenal have given Premier League minutes to five academy graduates this season,
=====
Think they need to recount.

You get a different sense of joy watching an academy player score or put in a top performance, it's great to see and I hope that never changes.

The OP references goals scored by academy graduates, not appearances. Five of United's academy players have scored in the PL this season. Several others have made appearances, e.g. Chong, Lingard, Gomes, Garner

I was quoting from the article. They need to recount.
