Mason 'The Cucumber' Greenwood

How cool is the lad? He never looks flustered when he has a chance and always knows what he wants to do/where he wants to put the ball. He spots where the space is in the goal and manoeuvres himself/the ball so he can hit that space. His finish tonight was a good one, although the keeper might have done better. But what really impressed me were the two touches before he shot. The first touch he makes like he's looking to get the ball on his right foot and go across goal. As a result the keeper doesn't properly cover his front post, then Greenwood takes another quick touch onto his left foot and pulls the trigger. It was a good finish. But more impressively for me it was intelligent and also natural at the same time. He instinctively knows where the space is or how to create it. This kid could smash all kinds of records.

I think Januzaj was more impressive at 18, to be fair. He carried our attack for a lot of that season. He didn’t kick on as expected, unfortunately, but as far as debut seasons for 18 year olds go he was very impressive.

He had some good games but he didn’t carry our attack by any means.

He is prime example of why not to get overly excited by a young player but 12 goals so far in a sometimes struggling side with limited game time is impressive.

You have a short memory. He was carrying our attack for a lot of the season with so many of our other atttackers injured or out of form. It was unfair the amount of responsibility we placed on the young lads shoulders. Our tactics often ended up being to just pass it to him and hope he made something happen. He was having to drag us up the pitch.

Greenwood, by contrast, has not had nearly the same responsibility and as a result hasn’t had to have the same sort of impact. Greenwood’s been impressive, no doubt, but Ole’s managed him really well and he’s come up with the goals when called upon. But he’s not had the same level of performance, or impact, that Januzaj had on the team in his debut season. This is just recency bias.

My concern with Greenwood is his all round game. He is a superb finisher but drifts in and out of games. Hopefully that is something he can sort out as he gets older
