VVD, has everything Ferdinand had and more, when you consider his quality on the ball also minus the dopey mistakes Ferdinand made on occasion.

He is the perfect centre back. If you were to create a centre back from scratch, you'd create VVD.

This solves the mystery of who’s been stockpiling the white lightning.

What do you disagree with? What did Ferdinand have that VVD doesn't? VVD is not better than Ferdinand was on the ball?

VVD is not the perfect defender?

Both fine players, but let’s see this level from VVD for a prolonged number of seasons as Ferdinand did.

Both great on the ball, in the air, were great leaders, could read the game brilliantly.

That’s when it’s the toss of a coin.

Not comparing longevity as one's career is finished and the other maybe 2/3, I say it's actually about equal. Both are one-of-a-kind ball-playing defenders who were actually very good defenders themselves. The only big difference is that Rio will most likely have won more trophies with Utd than VVD is going to and that VVD will be most likely be by far THE best defender of his era (almost winning balon d'or), while Rio was up there with 10+ other contemporaries like, Terry, Vidic, Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro, Pujol, Thuram Lucio etc.)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That's partly because the crop of CBs back then was much better than now.

Cannavaro actually won the World Player of the Year. Thuram, Lucio, Nesta, Puyol and Cannavaro were all World Champions. Maldini was an icon. Much harder to stand out among such a crop.

Even among the current generation of CBs, Ramos is by far and away the best. In terms of what he's actually achieved, he's arguably the best defender of all-time (although you could make a case for Beckenbauer).

I'd comfortably have Varane ahead of VVD as well (and Umtiti, Hummels and Boateng when they were in their prime).

Two of the best cbs to play in the league.

Hard to compare when Rio did it all and for a long period of time. VVD hasn’t had the chance to do that yet.

Not a chance

The amount of cards he’s had alone shows his reading of the game isn’t the best.

Ramos would have about three a season in the PL.

Physical, ball playing, ball winning CB in a league of divers.

Right now I say Rio was a better defender, I have no doubt. Virgil is a potent goal threat, but not as savvy as Rio and makes some poor choices which burns his keeper, too often. He's still fairly young and could still blossom into a first-rate defender too. Rio really was a rare talent and had that cool head to go with it. He was real class and makes my all-time fantasy 11.
