Benzema never played with players as good as the ones in that world cup squad. Exhibited by the fact that France won the world cup without their cf having a shot on target.

Benzema has played for Real Madrid, a club renown for unhealthy player power damaging results and success. A reputation that has not been subdued in the last twelve years. They still win a lot, because they're Real Madrid, but they have seen some awful troughs. Would be quite something to suggest that Benzema, with his known personality issues, has not contributed to those troughs as well as the peaks.

Benzema has played with some extraordinarily talented French squads and ones good enough to get out of the group stages. France's 2018 squad was its best, partly because it had fewer talented but idiotic players like Ben Arfa and Benzema.

Nothing tangible there to suggest him being a diiiiickhead has held him back as a player, though.

None of the squads he played in were anywhere near as good as that French side. They’d have suffered the same results with Giroud. It’s just such a terrible argument.

This is a player whose attitude has been criticised by Makele, Gallas, Mourinho, Zidane (privately) and Laurent Blanc, who also called him overweight. In fact, in the summer of 2011, he was forced to lose eight kilos of excess weight.

Again, the squad in 2010 had no right getting knocked out of the group stages, and the talent pool at the time included several players who should have made a lot more of their abilities than they did (Nasri, Ben Arfa, Anelka, Benzema) and plenty more with iffy personalities. Players like Gallas, Evra, Ribery and Benzema have a lot to answer for at that tournament.

But they’ve been collective issues that have only been a real problem under Mourinho at club level. And plenty of those players have still reached an excellent level, including Benzema. I just don’t really see this supposed diiiiickheadness holding him back on the pitch for Real Madrid - the internal French politics is another matter that has ruined his international career. His role in the team and his flaws as a player have been the defining features in him not being better than he could have been.

And despite that he’ll end up finishing his Madrid career as their all time assist leader, at least 5th top scorer as well as being in the top five goal scorers in CL history. I think you’ve got ridiculously unrealistic expectations if you believe he’s become nowhere near the player he could have been.

If Benzema had Giroud's natural ability he'd be in the fourth division at best.

I think you are overstating how good he is

But he’s clearly a very good player.

Always thought Benzema a tad overrated, would go with Giroud.
