Peter Schmeichel

He’s come out recently and said he regrets leaving us when he did in 1999. Had he stayed - and he was 36 at the time so probably could have given us 2/3 more years at the top - how do you think we would have done?

We didn’t do too badly in the league - two more league titles after he left but in Europe we suffered. I’m certain Schmeichel would have done better than Van Der Gouw in that fateful Real game. And done better than Barthez the season after.

Did Schmeichel leave at the right time? And how much would you have given to see his fight with Keano?

Schmeichel at any age could not have been worse than Barthez.

A liability that single-handedly stopped his team mates setting all kinds of records.

Brian Clough put Keane on his @rse, angry windbag.

Schmeichel could easily have stayed another 2 years+ if you're going to replace a key player make sure it's with someone equally valuable.

A liability? lol

Barthez was probably the most accomplished goalie of his generation.

He won the World Cup, Euro 2000 and the Confederations Cup, plus reached a 2nd World Cup Final to boot.

He won the CL with a heavy underdog Marseille side, and 2 league titles with Monaco.

From Keano's book below.

+++++

Keane says that the alcohol-fuelled fight with Schmeichel, occurred during a pre-season trip to Hong Kong in 1998 - but he actually means 1997, as United did not tour Hong Kong in 1998

"Peter would come out shouting at players, and I felt sometimes he was playing up to the crowd: ‘Look at me! He was probably doing it for concentration levels, but I felt he did it too often, as if he was telling the crowd: ‘Look what I have to deal with.’ He said, ‘I’ve had enough of you. It’s time we sorted this out.’ So I said, ‘OK,’ and we had a fight. It felt like 10 minutes. There was a lot of noise – Peter’s a big lad. I woke up the next morning. I kind of vaguely remembered the fight. My hand was really sore and one of my fingers was bent backwards. Butty [Nicky Butt] had refereed the fight. Anyway, Peter had grabbed me, I’d head-butted him – we’d been fighting for ages."

Shows what a load of tools professional footballers really are. Like kids in a playground.

Nicky Butt "refereed it"

Not the kind of scrap between 2 'hard men' I ever saw when rolling out of the pubs!

Really liked Keano’s book - so much so I read the entire thing on a Valencian beach one day and ended up with the worst sunburn I can ever remember 😂

At the utd legends thing a couple of weeks back pallister spoke about the keane schmeichel.

According to pallister schmeichel was on top of keane and would have killed him had he not pulled him off.

He left schmeichel who wanted to carry it on after keane had left.
The following morning schmeichel came down wearing sunglasses which cover a black eye

Keane is like that bloke in every pub who gobs off all the time.

There is always someone bigger and harder than you and he is usually just around the corner.
