Qatar 2022 World Cup

This tournament will run from 21 November to 18 December (4 weeks)

It is expected that EPL teams will be back playing to allow for the traditional Christmas fixtures - so probably a week later.

There will also probably be a couple weeks before hand when the teams come together pre-tournament to train, settle in, acclimatise etc.

So in all likelihood we'll see the season pause after a weekends fixture on 5/6 Nov and restart again on 23 Dec. taking 6 weekends out of the season. However, one is usually an international weekend, but last season also an mid-week EPL set of fixtures - so 6 league games + a couple European fixtures to be redistributed over the season.

Now I suspect to offset this impact the season will likely start a bit earlier and end a bit later - clawing back say 2 weeks. They'll probably also do away with 1 or 2 international breaks, clawing back another 1 or 2 weeks.

The real impact could therefore just be the need to move 2 game weeks & 2 Euro games to other parts of the season.

Translating this to the 20/21 season, we could lose 4 weeks of the season and still accommodate all fixtures in much the same way as we will have to in 2022 (squeezing more games in, losing some international breaks, ending slightly later). We wont be able to claw back time by starting earlier and it cannot overrun too long as we have the Euros starting in June 2021.

No way will the 20/21 season run on time

I heard on SSN this morning Uefa are considering finishing the EL/CL after the domestic leagues finish late summer

They are certainly looking to finish this season first before agreeing a timetable for next season.

I would hope and expect their contingency planning to be looking at everything.

Right now there is plenty of time still to complete this season and get on with next, albeit delayed, so that is in the forefront of their consideration and comment right now.

But Consider the scenario that in completing this league season, there is insufficient time to complete next. They have to have that in the back of their mind and be planning for it.

Its all very well saying now that the UCL will complete after the season completes late summer but right now we don't know when the season will complete.

Wuhan was locked down for over 2 months. Apply that here and that's mid to late May before we're allowed about again.

Yeah would be stupid to start planning for next season now. More info is required.

In that case, they will probably still choose to finish this season. They're not stupid.

You cannot plan that far ahead with this virus I'm afraid.with the little info we have on it right now.

This is why they want to finish this season and then plan from there, to many unknowns in this situation
