During prohibition there was a drink they sold in soda fountains called jake
It was essentially a Jamaican ginger based drink that contained alcohol and drugs
If one drank too much you could get jake leg a condition where one couldn’t walk
Many Irish immigrants suffered from it
We share some common la hushed

Cheers mate. You mate be right. Origins of words is really interesting stuff but slang is right up there.

Never heard of "jake" before but there's quite a bit on wiki about it. Worth a wee look. Because it was a medicine it was widely available in the dry states and during prohibition.

Wiki also has a quite a few wee nuggets on it, including this-

Looked it up...to be fair it didn't really become orange until 1955 do I won't be pursuing that one.

I love a good made up slur but it has to have a train of truth.
