Because they didn't like the truth!

But joking aside Cal, Leeds were a team that combined sublime football with their ruthless mean streak and it was a combination that worked so fair play.

I think, that day Chelsea decided they would not be intimidated by Leeds and set out to match them physically.

The result was the fantastic and eagerly awaited replay that up until the England v Croatia WC semi in 2018, held the 2nd high viewing figures of any sporting event after the 66 WC!

Which of course we won!

That mistake let David Harvey (I think) in for the replay. I always thought that was harsh on Sprake as he was a fine keeper.

It certainly was a lifeline for us and Leeds were the better team on the day, which is what I'd expected pre-match anyway.

I shall have to do another article on the 29th!

Great memories there Brummie, I remember those finals well. Two great, if brutal games.

When I was a young schoolboy, yes I was that young buck once upon a time.I went on a school football trip up to Yorkshire in 1963, and we played a couple of games in and around the Leeds area, we were also taken on a tour of Elland Road during our stay, and Don Revie was supposed to be our host and show us around, but couldn`t make it, and Les Cocker showed us around. It was interesting to hear him say what a great bunch of young lads he had coming through, as they were in the old second division at the time. I think they won promotion the following season, and thereafter for the next several years become one of the most feared teams around. They may not have always been pretty, but they were an absolute well oiled machine under the tutorship of Don Revie. I really liked them when they were first promoted, not so much when they started to get a repuation for being thuggish. Don Revie though was a severely underrated manager in my opinion.

Wonderful story Sandy. It's actually a shame they're still tarnished with that reputation because they played some fantastic football as well.

Eddie Gray in particularly was tremendous to watch in full flow and Giles was a genius with the ball.

Cheers for the memory Sandy!

No problems Brummie, I have plenty more stories like that up my sleeve from back in the day.

Sadly most on the boards only want to talk Prem era.

Funnily, Michael Oliver has also reviewed the game a few days ago.

From his conclusions he said he would have handed out 11 Red cards - mind you two of them were both for Eddie Mac!

Additionally he'd have handed out 16 Yellow cards, although Webb, Hutch and The Bonnie Prince would have had three each!

He also noted the difference in attitude of latter day players to their modern day counterparts saying:

"It's amazing to watch them – not a single player ever appeals to the referee".

Yes mate, both Bites yer legs and The Cat, lost within the week of the 50th Anniversary!

I thought that the tribute paid to Norman Hunter on Twitter by Franny Lee today was both welcome and classy, as they famously haven't always been the best of mates.
