Coutinho

Some football news to talk about (sort of)

Gossip suggesting we are close to agreeing a move for Coutinho

Not actually sure who this would be bad news for in the existing first team and where we intend to play him

Stern competition for Mount i expect and might cost him some time in the first team. Wouldnt offer the same level of pressing though so it would change our style a bit to use him as first choice in the advanced midfield role

What would you deem a wing 10?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Any player that plays out wide and cuts in, Hazard would be an example'.as would Pires. A position on the pitch doesn't dictate a free role.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I wouldn’t say how he played was similar to either of those two. However I would say Hazard had a free role under Conte.

What would you define as a free role?

I don’t think you get a modern day ‘Free Role’ anymore though, I would say Messi under Valverde is possibly the only example I can think of, maybe Neymar but I barely watch PSG.

I’d say modern day free role is the player who is the outlier to the tactical system and is usually the player who the team is built around more than anyone else. Ronaldo at RM, Coutinho at Pool, Bale under AVB, even to a considerably lesser extent KDB under Pep but that’s a different debate.

I’d say Salah was briefly the start of last season especially when Klopp was trying to fit Shaqiri in.

I guess ‘often’ is a bit disingenuous but Klopp has clearly progressed from his Dortmund days and is more pragmatic allowing individuals to dictate his tactics more than before (the sign of a good manager).

The free-role debate
------------------------------------------------------

I'm an admirer of the tactical side of the game more than the playing side and I'm still not 100% sure what a free role is? Depending on your source definitions can range between a playmaker who isn't completely static & Messi 09-12, one defines tons of players in free roles, the other renders the term something of a tactical unicorn

Taking it very literally I'd go with GTW14T's definition, which means it would only be beneficial to a team if you have a lazy player whose technically head and shoulders better than his teammates. Examples like Robinho at Man City & Quaresma at Porto spring to mind.
