Opinion / Questions (Current Pandemic)

Disclaimer i'm in no way trying to "play down" the severity of Coronavirus but i'm just genuinely curious how this has altered your way of thinking or if you think it might have some effect on why we are seeing everything we are seeing.

Do you think the reason everyone is so worried and scared is because we have not really had things like this publicised before or garnered so much media attention and exposure and all of the daily briefings on it etc?

Like i will admit to being naive but i didn't realise or really acknowledge as many as 1,500+ people die a day in the UK in general from all sorts of things.

Apart from some deaths that make front page paper or news or some other ones that make it into the news but not highlighted as such we do not specifically give numbers out every day about the other things people die from or can die from.

There is so many ways we risk our lives everyday that we do not really acknowledge, i know some of these some of us have sadly experienced losing people from or thankfully surviving from but we could walk down the road and a car could lose control and we could be hit and die, we could wake up with a brain tumour or feeling ill which could be something like cancer, we could have a car crash and die through no fault of our own, what is stopping one of us being involved in a terrorist attack or a random frenzied assault/stabbing spree?

The list is endless, yet everyday we put it to the back of our mind and we get on with our lives. Every winter we know we are likely to get a cold or the flu which could result in us picking up a serious chest infection from and bronchitis/pneumonia that could change us forever, we drink and damage our liver, we smoke and damage our lungs, which increases our risk of heart attacks / diabetes / strokes / cancers. Yet many of us still do it.

But these do not really get acknowledged, if we did daily briefings and updates on how many people in the UK unfortunately got a cancer or serious illness each day, or how many people died and how they died and the cause of death and it was in our face every minute of every day we'd likely be fully aware to the full extent of the risk of deaths.

Would that mean we would then stop what we do or would you think when it's your time it's your time and whatever will be will be?

It's just very hard to assess, likely because this is new but we've been in lockdown for nearly 5 weeks and yes deaths thankfully seem to have peaked and the NHS hasn't been overwhelmed so that is a success but we have still not really seen a reduction in new infections, we are still getting 4,000-5,000 + everyday even with the small crap amount of testing we are doing. So it does kind of beg the question if it really is having a true effect.

Then the other points arise, is this here to stay? Will it go away but come back in the winter? Is it a new thing to go alongside the cold/flu every year? Do we go into lockdown every year? Is a vaccine even possible considering early information indicates it has already got 33 different mutations/strains? Can we even get testing accurate as it still seems like it's giving false positives/negatives and we are now into the second month of our pandemic.

Seems like in 2 months that it has been here officially, Scientists and everyone else are still no real closer to finding out any real data. You read one thing that the mortality rate is actually much lower than anticipated then read another one say it's actually much higher, then you get another one saying the lockdown has had no real effect and another one saying it has had an effect.

Then you get the other general increased deaths now occurring due to lack of treatment for the likes of cancer patients and diabetics, or people that have something genuinely wrong with them but are worried about going to hospital.

It's been 5 weeks now of Lockdown and infections are still high, we are no real closer to having learned anything worthwhile from scientists and doctors and we are still seeing high infection rates that were how they were before lockdown.

So what the fack do we do, it does come to a point where we are all just going to have to say fack it it's another thing to add to the endless list of stuff we can potentially die from and get on with our lives.

Like how has your viewpoint changed over the last few weeks or what are your honest thoughts on the situation and what should we do, how is it making you feeling? Has it highlighted death numbers in general more for you?

New York have started testing parts of the general population. 3000 in one test area and it looks like 14% had signs of Covid in their system.

I think people hoping for those high numbers are living in a dream world just like those saying they had this virus in December.

There’s quite a lot of evidence to reasonably suspect there are quite massive amounts of asymptomatic spread, which is in line with the viruses calculated transmission rate

Wouldn't that 14% be people who currently have covid in their systems? Wouldn't count assymptomatic or mild symptom people who have already recovered? The real figure for that 3000 could be much higher

That 14% came from a test of assymptomatic people from what I understand. Don't quote me on that but I think that was the purpose of the test. So combined with general testing I guess you could argue 30% have had it. But again don't quote me on any of that.

Just wouldn't see the significance of 14% if it was no different to their normal testing.
