The 08/09 season

Im interested to hear what ours and man united fans memories are of this season.

Been a lot of neville and carragher on the telly recently and I've often heard carra talk about how this team was the best he played in. Id agree with that. What he also has said is that during his career he always felt miles away from united, far inferior. This i tend to disagree with, this particular season I felt there was very little between the two sides at all.

We finished on 86 points. 4 behind united. We lost 2 games all season, scored the most goals, had the best goal difference and beat united home and away. We absolutely killed ourselves with stupid draws at home against teams nowadays we obliterate.

That team for me was so strong. Incredible spine with reina carra hyypia arbeloa gerrard alonso mascherano kuyt and torres. What it lacked is what we have in abundance now, creativity. Imagine a mane or salah in that team on the left.

That united team were absolutely 1st class, cant deny that at all but i think we were right up there with them at that time. What do others think about carras thoughts that we were punching above our weight and weren't on uniteds level that year?

Yeah I agree with M52, don’t think he was overrated, fans just enjoy seeing players like him who make the game look so fun, even though it was clear he didn’t really improve us.

Personally I do think he was massively overrated. Didn’t score enough goals and rarely influenced big games.

It was telling that in his so called best season for us he didn’t even make the squad for the CL final.

If it wasn't for that Macheda moment I think it could have been very different.

It was dipstick benayoun fouling in the last couple of minutes to let Everton get a free kick which they scored from.

Also Lucas against Wigan, conceding a pen late on when we were 1 up, they didn’t even have a shot on goal until then.

Fine margins that. I would agree that Man Utd had a far better squad..

Enduring memory from that season is the way we obliterated Real Madrid 5-0 on aggregate.

Tbf they were probably one of the worst Real sides in living memory. Lassana Diarra was in CM

Liverpool were very good that season but just didn’t have as good an eleven as us, nor as good a squad as us. Not to mention manager.

Thought Berbatov was world class, one of my favourite signings.

However, he didn't suit the style of our football.

He could play the game walking, which when you have the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez, it was counterproductive to do so.

Berbatov seemed to lack the mental strength on the biggest occasions too. Apart from the Liverpool hattrick obviously. He missed a great chance to level it against Chelsea at OT and a sitter to win it against Blackburn a week or 2 later in 2010, for example. Talented player but rarely delivered when it mattered, and often flattered to deceive

Personally, and its just my opinion, there was nothing in it in terms of starting 11. I think we showed that during the 2 games we played against you. But yeah id agree squad wise we were a good bit short in comparison to yourselves.

Maybe, but all seasons have their defining moments and all clubs have their if moments.

my memories of this season was rafa making an almighty mess of it by selling robbie keane and ending up playing 2 or 3 games with no Tories and no Gerrard and realistically we lost that title in January/feb.

hammering it's at old Trafford is all well and good but the title was gone by drawing to boro I think and Wigan
two gimme games we had Babel up top for.

beyond the starting XI that Liverpool team was pretty average which is why they finished 6th or something like that the following season

There's a weird stat about that season in that in the 24 games Gerrard and Torres got on the pitch together, we won 23.

Squad depth killed us and led to draws.
