Build a team around him

There have been many great central midfield players and sometimes fans or managers talk about "building a team around them". It's an expression that only ever seems to be used about that position. OK , if you built a team around a full- back or centre-forward half the team would be off the pitch, and most of the great teams have had a talented or inspirational "midfield general". But what do you do when he is injured?
Back in the day.....when Bryan Robson did his shoulder in we were lucky enough to also have Ray Wilkins to step in, a very similar player in most aspects of the game.
Surely you need to have all the other positions covered and then be lucky or clever enough to find that midfield diamond.

“Injuries, notably a dislocated shoulder suffering in February 1986, restricted Robson to just 21 out of 42 league appearances for United in 1985–86“

“Wilkins played 105 games (74 in Serie A) for Milan between 1984 and 1987.

Yeah, have to agree with this. One was a very dynamic player and one was about continuity.

Personally I think it’s rare that a team is built around a classic CM. It’s usually an attacking midfield, a number 10 or a forward. The only successful midfield focal point that springs to mind is Lothar Matthaus. He arguably had several German team built around him.

First time I have ever heard Robbo and Butch Wilkins described as 'similar in most aspects of the game'.

I think both players would be flattered to think that there is somebody out there who thought they possessed each other's best attributes on the football pitch.

They were chalk and cheese, mate.
