Gerrard - Success or Failure

It is 2 years since Gerrard arrived at Rangers. In they two years they have finished second, lost a few semi finals, reached one cup final, beaten Celtic a couple of times and made the last 16 of the Europa League.

A few years back when we were on 6IAR or something I predicted that by 8IAR Rangers would be closer to a challenge and by 9 would be challenging. That appeared to be on track then a collapse of unbelievable proportions set in.

So, has Gerrard been a success or not? Done evidently well in Europe but only 1 real opportunity at domestic glory was scuppered by Celtic in the league cup final so 6 out of 6 domestic competition losses.

Should he really be expected to beat Celtic to the title? Has he done what any other appointment wouldn't have done (had Rangers not gone for the bizarre appointments prior to him).

He has had some belting statements over the two years but he seems to have a very strong backing within the Rangers support regardless of his shortcomings.

With the narrow scope of this question by SPFL-CS, with only success or failure being the outcome, then the measure for a manager of either side of the old firm is trophies.

Having studied this forensically, the only outcome is failure as he has no trophies.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You can study it any way you like, but you’re forgetting that bringing money into the club through success in Europe is also extremely important, which is why I marked his success/failure rate as 50/50
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s why I said I was only using the narrow scope given to us, and maybe also my first comment right at the start of the thread?

And it’s a bit rich now to start bringing up how important finances are-we’ve been telling you plamfs this for years!!

He’s done much better in Europe than he has domestically I think-in terms of exceeding expectations. He has won 3 old firm games (although I’m sure some would debate that 1 of them was a dead rubber), but his cup record is probably a bit poor, and that’s 2 seasons in a row the challenge has died after the mid season break.

His transfer record is probably patchy, but most managers have a mixed record. The wage bill at Ibrox does seem to have increased by quite a bit, and to have had no sustained league challenge going into the last round of games, and no trophies probably doesn’t help.

Yeah, he’s a rookie manager, but that only gets you so much leeway. If Celtic had managed to increase the lead before the end of the season, I think he would be in real jeopardy-same as the board.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Meh who gives a f@ck about scope. No one else on here seems to pay any attention

As far as finances go I’d always go for the option that doesn’t involve timmy speculation. Many years of listenin to you khunts have led me to this point

I completely agree with your last paragraph. It’s the EL cash that’s kept him in a job. If we’d got papped oot early on he’d have been well out by now.

Yeah, he’s be struggling to keep his job if not for the EL. His record is a bit of a conundrum. His win rate isn’t particularly impressive, but that’s more than likely down to playing better opposition in the EL. He seems to be able to get the players to raise their game for the EL, but they look scared in a number of domestic games-especially the second half of the season.

Could go on. For every positive, there’s an equal and opposite negative just now. Unless he wins a trophy, it’ll stay like that.

Yep I’d agree with all of that

The one that baffles everyone is the nosedives after the winter break. There’s no accounting for it happening two years in a row. That’s the part where people are quite rightly questioning his ability and temperament for the job.

First half of the season was excellent from him and the team. He can be forgiven for not winning the LC because Rangers absolutely 100% should have won it.

But the fact is that he didn’t win it and the team fell apart after the break and these things will edge him closer to the door if things don’t improve.

I do bet though that the board would’ve been delighted at the cash and exposure generated by the EL campaigns.

Hey!! Don’t be surprised at me being objective and fair-that’s how I roll.

It's been said before but I think it's correct, his style of play is suited better to playing against sides that want the ball and want to attack.

It's quite frustrating that he can beat good teams like Porto, braga, celtic and Feyenoord but lose games v hearts (twice) and Hamilton.

Might well be the case Miller. That’s possibly part of the problem-an inability to adjust these tactics to take into account different styles.

Exactly yes. He's done well at times but when it falls apart it's often by teams that haven't had to do anything creative to get it.

Hearts more recently was inexcusable because hearts won by playing the same game twice and why not, we played them exactly the same both times. I'm not sure if that was arrogance, stupidity or trusting the players too much.

In other news...

‘ Rangers will delay the release of their evidence into alleged wrongdoing by the SPFL hierarchy. The Ibrox club was due to circulate a dossier to the other 41 clubs today in support of its call for an independent probe. The clubs are scheduled to vote on the issue at an extraordinary general meeting next Tuesday.

If there is not 75 per cent support in each of the top two divisions, and the same backing over the bottom two combined, there will be no mandate for an investigation under SPFL rules.
Rangers intend to continue working on their documents and will finalise how they are presented before releasing them over the next 48 hours.

The 12 Premiership clubs will hold their second conference call meeting in six days today. The Rangers issue is not expected to be up for discussion but clubs will give further consideration to how and when to conclude the league.

Last month’s controversial vote not only decided the three lower divisions but it empowered the SPFL board to vote on a similar conclusion to the top flight which would crown Celtic, relegate Hearts — unless there is reconstruction — and release final placement payments.

All the Premiership clubs are now being consulted on that. Most are prepared to end the season now while three or four are still prepared to wait. A decision will be required before a Uefa deadline on May 25.’
