Play off's!..

It’s really isn’t.

The rules are set at the beginning of the season. Everyone knows them and they are fair.

Our season would have been over by end of jan, most seasons.

Crowds would drop in every league

How people can not see this, is beyond me

Without play off the value of the tv rights drops massively.

The play off games will bring in the most advertising revenue for the broadcasters. And the play offs also increase the revenue in the second half of the season for regular fixtures by ensuring that they mean something.

Like it or not, all clubs in the football league suffer without play offs because without them the product isn’t as valuable.

That’s the point, it’s run and governed by money

Not fairness, or ability over a whole season, but money

It’s corrupt - and there’s no way of justifying its fairness

That fact that everyone knows that at the start of the season doesn’t somehow make it ethically right

A football season should be governed on ability not finances

If the playoffs are so ‘right and necessary’ why not include the top 2 in then playoffs also - could you imagine the outcry if that were to happen and the team in 6th beat the team finishing top

It’s exactly the same scenario, how can a team finishing 4th, 5th or 6th justify going up above a team that finishes fairly above them

It’s just plain wrong

I think you need to look up the definition of corrupt.

Also, do you think that if clubs were given a vote...

Option a) scrap the play offs and all prize money will be reduced by X%

Option b) keep the play offs and keep the prize money.

They will be voting for option a?

Just cos it makes sense from a financial point of view - it died to make it right

Why should a team that isn’t as good and another over the course of a whole season be promoted above a team that they finished well below of? How can that be justifiable?

The only argument anyone can make is purely to do with finances - end of

Finances and entertainment.

But at the end of the day the games sole purpose is entertainment.

I get that you would prefer to see the top 3 go up and your reasons for that.

But that doesn’t make play offs corrupt.

It also doesn’t make it plain wrong.

It’s just another factor of football that has pros and cons. Like just about everything in the real world.

I would keep them but make sure that 3rd place gets some sort of advantage over the others. Maybe let 5th play 6 home and away. Winner plays 4th home and away. Winner of that plays 3rd in the final.

I've always been against play off's and find it unfair to 3rd!..

They are the team that has worked as hard as 1&2 but its like being punishment for doing so!..

As for clubs/teams thinking the play off's are their aim from the start of season, it'd be better when they know only the top 3 gets you promoted therefore letting everybody know there's only 3 places to play for!..

It gives less to play for and more to fight for!..

There is nothing unethical about it at all.

What you fail to understand is that the Championship and the championship play offs are separate competitions, in the same way that the Championship and the Premiership are separate each other and how they in turn are separate from the Europa and Champions League.

If you finish in the top two, you win qualification to the Premiership, if you finish between 3rd and 6th you qualify for an entirely separate competition.

The value of winning that separate competition however is of the same value as a top two finish.

According to your logic the Europa League is unethical, as the winner of that is awarded a chance to enter a higher competition... in fact by your logic all competitions you qualify for but then lead to another competition are unethical.

If you work on a ranking system its easy to see.

The Championship has a value of 1

Finishing in the top 4 of the premiership has a value of 1

The Europa League has a value of 2

Finishing 5th or 6th in the Premiership has value of 2
Winning the FA and League Cup also has a value of value of 2

Winning the Europa League has a value of 1 and thus you qualify for the champions League


so,

the Premiership has a value of 1

First and second place in the Championship have a value of 1

The Playoffs have a value of 2

3rd - 6th Place have a value of 2

Winning the playoffs has a value of 1 and thus you qualify for the premiership.
