Favourite Director

Lockdown has allowed me to catch up on some movies that I normally wouldn't have the time to watch. Honestly was never really a movie buff to begin with and to be honest most of what Hollywood produces is complete trash. One director I always seem to enjoy though is Tarantino. He's insanely consistent in my view. Even his recent work which I know isn't to some people's liking is better than a lot of what we see on our screens. The dialogue in his films at times is outstanding.

Who is everyone's top director and why?

Peter Jackson is up there for me just on LOTR alone.

It was an incredible job to turn a masterpiece of fiction into what he managed.

Yep, I go along with that.

Some comments above about Tarantino and Spielberg.

"It's why I think Tarantino is such a good shout; his early stuff was about the same time and had a massive impact but the quality of his output over the last 25 years has remained so high."

What Naby maybe sees as consistency from Tarantino is what I find a bit disappointing about him: his basic shtick hasn't really changed much over the years. A very stylish and stylised mash-up of genres and references accompanied by razor-sharp dialogue. It felt so fresh and exciting in Reservoir Dogs and especially Pulp Fiction (and I really enjoyed Kill Bill). But I get the feeling he has never really grown up as a film maker. It's all the same style-over-substance, amoral approach, no real sense of having anything to say. It feels increasingly wearing to me.

On Spielberg, I reckon he's been a victim of how influential he has been. The innovations of his early films have been so assimilated by mainstream cinema that they don't seem particularly remarkable anymore. And he's such a crowd-pleaser that snobs like me don't tend to have much to say about his films. But I rewatched Jaws after a couple of decades and I realised what my younger self hadn't: it's so much more than a popcorn movie. It's a masterpiece of pacing, cinematography and editing. It's a great film.

Exactly, and well said regarding Jaws. I too saw this film recently and I picked up on how great the direction is in terms of the camera techniques, lighting and building up of tension. We even studied it in Film Studies back when I was in college.

All these monster movies that have come since don't hold a candle to Jaws and that is largely down to how well the film has been crafted. If, hypothetically speaking, Jaws never existed and then came out now, I think it would still be seen in high regard.

Oh 100%

He must’ve been smoking Old Toby when he made The Hobbit trilogy.

By the way, if you’re a big fan of the LOTR music, there’s a brilliant YouTube channel called ‘Ambient Worlds’ https://youtu.be/30b7_S0paCQ

Since most names have been listed are from west I'll list some names from from this side and also Tarkovsky because I think he was top top director. In bracket is the movie I enjoyed the most.

Andrei Tarkovsky (Stalker)
Na Hong-Jin (The Chaser)
Park Chan Wook (Oldboy)
Bong Joon-Ho (Memories of Murder)
Takashi Miike (Shield Of Straw)

Peter Jackson went downhill after the LOTR trilogy. Nothing since has even been as good as the stuff he did before the LOTR movies.

Too long and some poor use of CGI in places, but it was ok.

Jackson has gone the way of Lucas using CGI too much.
