The Death Of Fan Power?

I'm wondering how many here cancelled their sports subscriptions when football stopped. But have now started them again (or intend to) to watch the farce they're calling the rest of the season? I don't pay to watch football but if I did, there's no way I being paying a penny again before fans were let back into stadiums. I stream footy for nothing and still won't be watching any of this rubbish. Personally I'm still hoping it gets scrapped last minute though I know it'll go ahead.

I ask about subscriptions because the way I see it, every single one that is restarted before fans can get back in. Is a nail in the coffin of Fan Power. Global merchandising now means clubs can ALWAYS sell enough stuff somewhere. So the only real power fans have left, is their ability to say "We'll not support the team, like this," and walk out. Until now it has been a strong and effective weapon against problem club regimes (not always but usually). It only work because until now there's been a widespread belief it's the fans that make the game. "Without fans, there no atmosphere and without that, nobody will watch games."

So what happens to Fan Power now, after everyone scrambles to pay up and watch football again? Once Sky and FC bosses categorically see/prove that they can still get paid either way and the threat of fan boycott becomes next to useless. Given big businesses track record, depending on numbers they get, this could be a very bad thing for the fans and potentially the game itself.

Some people are just never happy

You should be a little more concerned about the "Anfield massive" getting neutered, when sky proves it doesn't need that 70k crowd in the stadium to get the FSG that same cheque. Despite winning the title, your club fans could arguably stand to lose the most here. Since it's clubs like yours where the fans clout is strongest.

I'm not concerned. This is temporary until there is a reputable solution to the global pandemic.

I never realised how many so-called football fans prefer the crowd noise to the football....

Remarkable. I wonder if the PL are aware that half their audience don’t actually watch for the football.

I didn't say I wanted to listen to crowd noise instead of watch football did I? So no I don't "Prefer the crowd noise to the football." I prefer the crowd noise WITH the football. I want both because I'm not a mug who'll lap up any scraps I'm thrown just because some rich says I should.

Hopefully for football fans everywhere, there are enough subscribing fans who feel the same way I do. Because it won't bode well for the future of fans if they don't.

May be temporary but the proof that an empty stadium don't mean a damn thing, will be permanent.

Yes and until now most of them have said crowds make watching the matches. The atmosphere is paid for as much as the football. People on the whole saying that, it why a walkout worries bosses so much. Petrified of an aired game and no fans in seats. Not any more.

Can’t say I’m in agreement with the OP’s central point, but the viewing experience isn’t the same, and the players will tell you the football isn’t the same, with empty stadia.

I read something saying the remaining games are going to be shown for free.
