Mclair and others

How good was brain mclair, Olsen, and Strachan for United the reason I'm asking is that these sort of players are forgotten while others are not for me the 3 mentioned for me played a big part olsen was one of my favourites players and Mclair had a good footballing brain and Strachan was good in the midfield. What do you think about them and is there any other players like that who you can remember.

Dunno about being good, but Brain Mclair's football knowledge was second to none

Chocky and Vic Anderson were Fergies first signings.

I find it hard to judge the 80s players because I was a kid at that point and had much less understanding of the game, no memories of previous eras to compare them with, and it wasn't possible to watch anywhere near as much football.

I absolutely idolised Bryan Robson, for example, but find myself keeping quiet when people debate Keano vs Robbo, because how a kid perceives a player and more generally processes information is very different to how a young adult does.

Players from the 80s who stick in my memory (in descending order):
- Robbo
- Mark Hughes (I was gutted when he left for Barcelona)
- Norman Whiteside
- Strachan
- Arnold Mühren
- Remi Moses
- Jesper Olsen

Random players who remind me of 1980s mediocrity: Terry and Colin Gibson, Peter Davenport

McClair was a good player for us, he grew on me.

The best thing I remember about Strachan was when he was manager of Celtic after the game he was waylaid by journalist
"Can I have a quick word Gordon"
"Velocity" came the answer as he disappeared.

I loved Arnold Murhen, really good left foot
good passer and crosser.

Robbo was great. That's not a word I use often, I did all the United greats and only got seven or eight. He could do it all, and was better than Keane much as I liked him.

Choccy was very good when we first signed him and played him as a striker for the first few seasons. The. Fergie converted him to CM and he was just about OK.

Olsen was hit and miss. He could be brilliant on his day but invisible when it wasn’t. I would say he was around a one good game in five player.

Strachan was never as good for us as he was for Leeds. He had good games but not many. His first season was very good if I remember correctly but the rest not so good.

Ferguson often described McClair as his best value signing until he signed Cantona.

He would have been very good in some of the 'modern' positions like false, playing off the main striker, etc.

He was a reliable finisher too.
