Former Utd players talk about RVP's....

First season at the club, For me, He'll go down as one of Sir Alex Ferguson's best ever signings, We got him when Man City wanted him - https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jun/03/its-still-ridiculous-robin-van-persie-2012-13-season-manchester-united

Fantastic vision from Wazza as well. Probably the greatest assist ever due to the finish.

Shame we couldn't get him a little earlier in his career.

Fergie leaving killed any desire RVP had left, he said he signed with the understanding he'd be there for the foreseeable future.

I think we were trying to get him before he went to Arsenal in 2004.

Was sat almost directly across from where he hit that volley vs Villa. There was a split second of silence in disbelief when the ball hit the net.

Don’t think it won goal of the season either which was a disgrace. Suarez won it with a goal that was great on the eye but really it was a hit and hope goal that you see the likes of in all 4 divisions every season.

Could be a good thread that one. What goal has your vantage point at the ground make it look that much better.

I would do it but have a work conference for an hour. Mine was the Norman Whiteside one at Wembley against Everton.

I was in the corner for the 3-2 win against Bayern.... The Robben goal had a slow motion quality to it where everyone in the crowd could see what was about to happen. Not the result we wanted, but was something to behold.

His volley against Villa was the most technically perfect goal i've ever seen. Fantastic player and deserved his PL medal after stagnating at a mediocre club.

It was sheer quality but a long forgotten goal that was more or less identical was scored by Shaun Bartlett for Charlton. See around the 3.26 mark here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHQNDWhajms

Very nice... amazing how similar they are, right down to the camera angles

RVP was a great player, but injury prone, plus we didn't have him during his prime.
It's funny that two of our greatest strikers are Dutch.

I remember back then not being that fussed on signing a striker that summer because scoring goals wasn't a problem for us the previous season, keeping them out was and surprise surprise, the midfield was still a major issue.

As brilliant as RVP was for us that season, I still look back at then and think what would've happened if we hadn't signed him and Kagawa and signed Lewandowski instead.

I know Dortmund didn't want to let him go at the time but I've always wondered would that stance have been the same if Kagawa had stayed and we'd made a real effort to sign him.

Lewandowski has said in a recent interview he was seriously considering a move to United after speaking to SAF but Dortmund wouldn't let him go.

A huge shame really because we'd have been sorted in the CF position for the forseeable future. Who knows what the post-Fergie years would've been like if a top class 30+ goal a season striker in their prime had been knocking about, one who's had a very good record of staying fit.
