Premier League Subs

Premier League teams will be able to make five substitutions, rather than three, in each match to the end of the season after clubs approved new rules.

Whilst we're changing the rules mid-season why not change the points for a win to 26 then at the same time.

Don't like this at all. Seems a pretty pointless change and will help the bigger clubs.

I kind of understand the increase to 5 subs, with injuries likely to be caused by playing so many games after an extended period of inactivity. But the 9 on the bench thing will surely just favour clubs with bigger squads and more options. Seems completely unnecessary to me

I dunno really. Smaller clubs will still see a benefit if they suffer a few injuries in the same position, before they may not have the required options on the bench whereas now they likely would do.

What if you don't have a Kepa?

I know it's swings and roundabouts, but I imagine this will even make a mockery for teams fighting relegation.

They'll constantly sub of their stronger players to keep them fresh for the actual relegation battles, than needlessly tiring themselves out against the big teams.

I'm not sure if I am a fan of it, but with a short period to finish the league, it's the only middle ground there is to alleviate fear of players inevitably getting injured.

OK cool, just checking that that rule hadn't changed too.

Changing the rules halfway through a season makes a complete mockery of any competition.

Covid-19 changes the situation more than any rule change. Having to play lots of games in a compressed time period after an extended gap would mean putting footballers at greater risk of injury and created an undesirable and avoidable possibility that games and seasons could be aversely affected by this. Having to play in empty stadiums sucks and some teams might have benefited more than others from home support, but it's better than filling stadiums and potentially spreading a deadly disease among tens of thousands of people. And completing the season under adapted rules and conditions isn't very satisfactory, but it's certainly less unsatisfactory than ending shelving it and designating titles / European places / promotions / relegations without giving teams the chance to fight for them, or cancelling the season and denying teams that are on the brink of achievements / saving teams that would have been fairly relegated.

This one helps your manager more than anyone else.

Dont agree with the belief it will favour the big clubs. Most of the top teams will have a lot of possession, the underdogs tend to do more running and chasing.

In terms of 5 HG in the 20, I think that will be the case most times. For a start you would have to have 3 due to the current rules. Most teams, with injuries and suspensions, would have no choice.

Barca manager was complaining about that actually. Saying that Barca tend to score late in the game against tired teams so the extra subs benefits their opponents.

This

However, bigger teams do have much stronger benches than the minnows so it balances itself out.
