Calvin Bassey

No point even trying to pretend I know anything about him, but it would appear that he is a decent prospect who we have snapped up ahead of some other decent teams. Sounds as though he is an attacking left back so will suit the way Gerrard likes to set up his team. Given that we have let Halliday and Flanagan move on, and that Barisic can be susceptible to injuries - it was essential that we moved and brought in cover. As ever, we will see how it works out but they appear to have done their homework on the kid.

Our spending was mental but I don't think we had multiple guys on more than the alleged most lucrative contract ever given in British football to that point.

Aye Miller.

Truth is probably somewhere in between.

It suited Murray sometimes to big things up.

Whilst there's no need to whip a horse that's died.

Interesting to note on that Guardian link that 5 years later Keane took a

70k per week pay cut to come to Celtic.

Wi' zero inflation he'd be paying Celtic 20k a week to play for them.

I blame inflation, journo guesswork, & vainglorious clubowners.

In reverse order.

Different contract. His 1999 extension would have taken him to 2003

Aye I did say 5 years later.

But the context could be widened.

In that year Manu were relative paupers in the epl.

In term of net spending they were 9th out of 20.

50k was small beer for the rest.

Even in the year Keane arrived here Manu were 8th biggest spenders.

And Rangers had been competing successfully with top epl for players.

Common talk at the time from both sides of the OF & nobody disputed

it. Most thought it funny 50k for polishing a bench.

Mind you it was in the fivers/tenners time.

Cannae whack a bit of revisionism.

And a very good evening to you Sir!

You seem to dispute the 50k.

Tell ye what - you stay where you are & I'll come down to you.

Can you prove it wasn't 50k?

Do you think it was more?
