Aubameyang speaks on his future

In an interview with Telefoot.

On his future at Arsenal:

"Recently I have not received an offer to extend. But of course we have had exchanges with the club, for a fair few months now. And they know very well why so far nothing has happened. They have the keys. Up to them to do their work and after that we will see how things go. As you said it is a turning point in my career, and I will be very frank with everyone, it will certainly be a very difficult decision to make. Because I still have not decided and we will see. It will maybe be the most important decision of my career."

On his objectives, winning titles:

"Of course – all players and competitors want to win titles. Everyone is going to ask the question, does he want to win them at Arsenal or somewhere else. But as I said, the future will tell us. As I have said already, the club has the keys to this. I am hungry to win titles, and whatever my decision, I intend to fight to win titles… To be clear, nothing has been decided."
========

I have to be honest. This doesn't sound too promising. Either he wants certain assurances from the club (in terms of wages or ambition in the transfer market) or he is looking for a more ambitious move irrespective of what we offer him.

I don't think any of us would be too surprised if he leaves, but who do we replace him with? Considering he only has 1 year left on his contract, if we do decide to cash in this Summer, it will (likely) be a paltry fee as he is our most valuable asset.

Would it be better to just let him stay at the club and leave on a free in 2021? Or do we get rid this Summer if he doesn't sign?

Arsenal need to take a tough stance here. Auba is 30+ and the last thing we need is to hand out mega contracts to players that are over their peak years. Can we afford another Ozil-esq situation?

It's time to build from youth. Take what you can from the likes of Aubameyang, Lacazette, Xhaka, Ozil and look to build on the youth we have. Martinelli, Saka, AMN, these are players we should be looking to secure.

In the current covid climate, we cannot afford to make any more financial mistakes.

100% agree.

Saka's new contract is more important for us than Auba's allthough my heart bleeds to let him go.

A couple of years contract on good wages is better than he'll get elsewhere so nothing wrong with 2 or 3 year contract. Where are we going to get guaranteed 20+ goals a season. Ian Wright scored 30 goals for us at 34 and winning the title, and players fitter now. So a 2 or 3 year extension would be well worth the investment.

Yeah I do agree with J99 on this.

We are unlikely to get a player of Aubameyang's calibre if he leaves us. He is a proven goalscorer in multiple top European leagues. Players like this are invaluable.

There are very few top strikers out there who we'd be able to get.

I don't think Nketiah or Martinelli are ready for that sort of pressure just yet. So it'd be worth keeping Auba around.

He'd also provide good mentorship for the younger strikers at the club who have already been mentioned earlier in this article.

There are no comparisons to Ozil. Ozil has never been central to how we play whereas replacing Auba's goals will be almost impossible. Nketiah is looking promising and could net 15-20 goals a season. Martinelli has the potential to be that 20+ goals a season striker. But they are both young and need pressure free football for a couple of years. In a couple of years I'd be far more comfortable with Nketiah/Mertinelli leading the line with Balogun on the bench ready to be the next one to breakthrough.

If we are going to spunk the majority of our funds on a new and expensive contract for Auba and invest very little elsewhere then let him go.

Yes he gets us goals but we have been going backwards as a team.

Ideally we need to strengthen MF and keep Auba but like I have said before, bar his goals, he offers very little in other departments.

We've been going backwards as a team because of our shockingly average midfield, disjointed defence and bad man-management from our predecessor, not because of Auba. If we improve those defence and midfield areas, Auba should get more goals.

Considering our low xG and low chance creation over the past 2 seasons, he's done well to even get the number of goals he has.

I'm not saying Auba is to blame. I just think him and laca unbalance our team big time when played together.

Yes you would beef up the MF to compliment Auba but are arsenal really going to pay him 300k and buy the likes of Partey and Co?

Who thought Arsenal would spend €80m on a player?

That is true but with us being out of CL football once again next season, its going to really hit us.

Arteta and the club have now mentioned that lack of cl football is killing our finances

Yes. We are being supported these days like Roman does for chelsea. but what can you do when Wenger bet the entire wage budget and our reserves on Mustafi, Kola, Ozil, Xhaka, Mikhi as the core of the team?
