Standards

I was just reading quotes from OGS that United are still not challengers yet, which is obviously quite right.

He went on to mention the standards that City & Liverpool have set over the past few seasons and it got me thinking.

These standards really have been unprecedented in the premier league era, in terms of points accrued etc. United have dominated by winning three in a row twice, Arsenal had invincibles, Chelsea beat United’s previous league record of points with 95 (I think) and have an unbelievable defensive record. But never have we had such high point scoring winners on this basis.

Ole’s quotes got me thinking: is this going to be the new standard now to win the league? Or do you think it might revert back to 79-86 points region?

I’ll be honest, the notion of having to get say 95+ points to win the league is quite scary is it just going to be the norm now going forward for the best team in the league? Or is it just a case of having two exceptional teams at the same time like Ronaldo & Messi or Nadal & Federer ie Both pushing each other but then normality resumes?

Thoughts?

It will revert back.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope so but I wouldn’t be surprised if we a similar trend for the next 5-10 years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I doubt it.

Our two seasons, our stats across the board were way above anything seen before, we couldn’t keep that up even still with Guardiola, let alone when he leaves.

Liverpool this season is a bit of an anomaly as they’ll end up with a points total above their performance level. They’d still win it easily but they’ve got a few results that normally would go the other way from time to time.

You also have a chasing pack all in varied states of flux that will start to improve more.

But even if it reverts back, what does that mean?

Does it mean that United and Chelsea bucked their ideas up and made it harder for City and Liverpool to romp home?

Does it mean that there were no terrible teams in the league that season and points were harder to come by, overall?

So many variables.

I am astounded at how well Liverpool have done this season. I don't believe, relatively speaking, they're any better than many of the title winners that have gone before them.

Why have they got such an impressive points total? No idea!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sure but it’s not just this season both Liverpool and City have anointed such high points for three consecutive seasons. Maybe as VC is suggesting and yourself the competition overall hasn’t been as tough over those years than previously.
There’s also too many variables to arrive at that conclusion also.
Maybe it was a pointless question 🤣
Not long until kick off now so we’ll have something else to discuss

Do you think these higher standards are here to stay or will it revert?

.....

Who is to say it is a higher standard. You could say the rest of the league is a really poor standard. Which it actually is.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fair enough, maybe it is just that the rest of the league is poorer. I personally don’t think that is the case but each to their own of course.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

What you're really asking is whether the high points totals will continue, I think.

But I think the more frequently it happens, the less you can put it down to a higher level of performance and the more you have to look for underlying reasons.

Essentially yes.

A little off topic, but

'As of 21 June 2020, Chelsea, Leicester City, Liverpool and Manchester City are the only teams to have mathematically secured their places in the Premier League.'

We still have some work to do

And Liverpool fans won’t accept that there are so many shiiiiit teams in this league.

Obviously teams like Villa and West Ham are grate.
