Leicester’s Demise Explained

Probably doesn’t take a genius to figure out but this article absolutely lays it out as to what has changed for Leicester pre and post Christmas

https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12017452/analysing-the-leicester-wobble-back-everton-to-cause-more-misery-at-11-2

Ultimately it’s the very same thing that did Ranieri, Shakespeare and Puel. Yep - teams sit in deep, beat the high press with direct football and stop the one thing that Leicester were killing everyone with last year - the counterattack.

Stop the counter attack. Stop Leicester. For all of the promising talk and tactical merry go rounds, Rodgers hasn’t been able to change a thing......

We should have had a lot more penalties. I am tempted to make a video of VAR decisions that have affected us this season.

How do you make that out?!

You’ll be 10 points clear of us by the time that comes around

Amazing at the start of the year you were outright 2nd and 14 points ahead of us with +20GD advantage. Never would have imagined Leicester City would fall so much, especially with what is at stake. Leicester City still in the driving seat for a top 4 place but if they keep the current form up 6th or 7th is looking likely.

A few of the fans were fearing it and could see it in the performances. The so called top 4 expert fans on 606 kept telling us to stop being so ridiculous and that we would stroll to a CL place

Leicester City have exceeded expected goals for and against massively. Today they underperformed it.

Maybe balancing out now.

Tbh I sometimes see form like this as reverting back to the mean. Look at Leicester’s squad, the likes of Albrighton and Justin starting today. Rodgers has no right to even have such good form for the first 2/3 of the season. The points per game Leicester was getting was way above what you’d expect for their squad.

In this poor run of form (lasting 8 games) if they’d won even half of that they’d be 5 points above City and on track to finish around high 80s on points. What manager could do that with Leicester’s squad? (Ok I know there’s a very ironic answer to that but..point still kinda stands I think).

So..I don’t think this run of form should taint Leicester’s and Rodger’s as a sum of the whole performance/success over the whole season.

Leicester City are 15th in the last 15 games form table and are still 3rd.

But if it was the case that we only have one weapon which can be easily found out, how come new managers /can/ start with a bang? If the swift counterattack is spotted and plugged, what happens with each new manager that suddenly unplugs it again?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Am I over simplifying this in saying it’s purely just needing variation in our play? Rodgers being rigid to the passing and slow build up from the back is a problem when you get a narrow deep block.

This also negates the counter and Vardy in behind.

Press our defence and you have the perfect storm!

So, isn’t the answer that when teams do that, change it up??? Rodgers seemed to be doing this mid game at one point with Everton at home being a case in point. But then seemed to stop.

If teams play narrow, why don’t we play with width? Push our fullbacks on and get balls out wide and fast. This will stretch the defence and create space for Vardy.

If that’s too open, switch to 3 at the back and really push our fullbacks on.

If that doesn’t work, get Albrighton and Fuchs on and simply wang balls in to the box from anywhere!!!

I joke at the end, but a serious point is that when plan A wasn’t working we seemed to have plan b and c. Now we seem to have plan A, a poorer version of plan A, and a desperate version of plan A.

We need a plan B again. For me it has to be widrh as a deep narrow block can stop our two biggest weapons of playing in behind or through the lines.

Problem is that Chilewell couldn’t cross a ballot paper and Justin looks devoid of confidence after the restart.

Now I’m depressed again.

The lack of a Plan B, not to mention Plan C, is disappointing. Whilst no-one could fault Albrighton for effort, his main attribute is his crossing ability. Snag is there is nobody capable of getting on the end of them with a reasonable chance of converting them into goals. The apparent position of there being no place in the squad for Slimani, whose main attribute is scoring headers, is, therefore, somewhat perplexing.

This is also where Rudkin and Rodgers failure to strengthen in January has hurt us. We don’t have the players to have a plan B or C and more crucially we haven’t invested in players to cover the first injuries or players who are out of form

The January transfer window was in hindsight ridiculous given our position
