Matic

It's official, he's here to stay until 2023.

https://twitter.com/ManUtd/status/1280075440661684225?s=20

I'm worried this means the Glazers won't be in a hurry to buy a younger version of Matic. McT and Fred are both different types of players, they also operate as box to box midfielders and are a little less disciplined than Matic. If he carries on this form then he'll make an excellent squad player over the coming years but we really should be pushing for another world beater to compliment Bruno and Pogba.

When will people understand that signing renewals doesn’t mean players will be there until the contract end date?

Players who’ve left before their contract renewals have run their course:

Fellaini
Blind
Mkhitaryan
Rooney
Januzaj
McNair
Schneiderlin
Nani
Van Persie
Rafael
Evans

Etc.

Half of those players were at least approaching 30 when they left.

I’m not saying Matic *won’t* stay at the club until his new contract runs down, but there’s an equal chance that he leaves before it does if we bring a new DM in or McT/Fred kicks on.

The majority of those players left for peanuts though.

If Matic returns to his 2018/19 form then it will hard to find any takers.

I don’t see why we couldn’t wait until at least a few months into next season to offer a new deal.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe the club thinks there’s a possibility he goes this summer?

Yup, in that entire list we only got a decent fee for Schneiderlin. Some of the others any transfer fee we received would barely have covered the bonus payment shelled out when a player renewed their contract.

And did Schneiderlin really renew his contract? He barely seemed to hang around long enough for the ink on his first one to dry.

Personally I'm happy for Matic to stay on - long enough for Garner to ease him out of the team? - but we sure do love to keep our deadwood around for years, giving them juicy contract after juicy contract.

Ole:

“I know his experience, professionalism and leadership will be invaluable to this young talented group.”

That’s a large part of the reason he’s being renewed and why Mata is still at the club.

Even if that’s true I doubt the new deal would have much of an influence on the transfer fee.

He only had a year left, which would have meant a tiny fee. Plus he’d have been able to talk to clubs in January.

No one is gonna pay big money for him anyway in this climate.

Just feel 3 years is a little excessive for a player most of us would have gladly seen the back off a year ago.

Could have waited until September or October to review the situation.

It’ll be a 2+1 deal, won’t it? I’d be amazed if the third year isn’t an option.

you would think/hope so, though the press release just says that the new contract will keep him at the club until 2023, which implies no extra options on either side. i think normally when a player signs an x + 1 contract the press release tends to spell it out, though i can't say i study them religiously.
