I’ve mentioned my issues with the whole undestat stuff before but they do reveal something about a player.

The xA is quite an interesting one, though. It seems to give better context to assist stats.

Theoretically you could have a player that plays in the same team as Messi and Greenwood and has far more assists than expected I suppose?

Pretty much. However you don’t tend to get as significant over-performances in xA as you can with xG

To me this is why ramos is a bit overrated as a ‘defender’.

Yes he’s a good captain, aggressive, passionate and he scores headers and penalties. But as a defender he gets exposed by players with pace, makes rash decisions and dives in committing countless fouls as he misreads situations.

That’s why for me he’s not in the best defenders in the world. Overall package he is a good player. But I just couldn’t call him one of the best defenders in the game.

Ramos is a good defender. A bit of a myth that he is easily drawn in. When he is in form, madrid are unstoppable.
He is also a winner. Wish we had someone like him

Because he misreads situations and get himself into trouble.

Ramos’ red cards are quite difficult to explain for a player that plays like he does. It’s not like he’s Richard Dunne, who was clearly a very average defender.

I think a lot of it is because for some reason the xG to over performance goals are from chances that aren’t assisted (ie come from a defensive mistake or most significantly a free kick (which has a value of 0.05 xG))

Ahh I see. And Messi probably travels too far before scoring for someone to have assisted him as well.

Defending wise he’s not as good as Van dijk, the level that Chellini, Bonnuci were at in their peak a few years ago to name a few.

I’m not saying he isn’t a good player as an overall package. But solely based on his ability to defend he is t the best around.

He’s not as good as VVD, I agree. He’s much better than Bonucci and Chielini are now. Was on their level when they were good as well. But that’s three you’ve named. He’s been among the very best for years, even with his red cards. The quality of cb’s isn’t what it was, granted, but he’s been one of the best around for very many years.

He's as good as Chellini and Bonnuci are now, and they aren't as good as they were.

He relies on his pace to get him out of trouble as his reading of the game isn't top top level.
