Head of Football

Manchester United's CEO Ed Woodward has once again put up the hunt for a football director, or "Head of Football" as United has called the position, on the agenda, writes the Telegraph.

Woodward does not want a person who will take the club in a new direction, but one who will complement Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the rest of the club, including the women's team. Atletico Madrid's Andrea Berta, Fabio Paratici at Juventus and Antero Henrique, who left Paris Saint-Germain a year ago, will all be current candidates, the newspaper reports.

Thoughs??

Can’t say as I’d be interested in PSGs.

It's something most of us have been crying out for for years but as 1982 says above, we've seen such reports before.

The other caveat is a director of football is only a positive thing if the role is well thought out, is empowered to fulfil defined roles that others in the club can't effectively carry out, and if the individual works in harmony with the coach. Ideally I'd have liked to bring in a DoF long ago to set the sporting strategy and to recruit coaches to fit this. What we don't want now, as we hint at (dare I say it) a modicum of strategic and joined up strategy in the combined efforts of Solskjaer's team and the business leadership, is someone brought in with a totally different agenda and a desire for another revolution. We want someone who can complement and support what we have.

The other thing we don't need is a figurehead sporting director - aka the Rio Ferdinand model.

Yep, that time when there may be very bad news on the pitch - depending on the leicester result - so we need a bit of fluff off it.

And I can't be the only one who cringed at the idea that the head of football will also be responsible for the overall direction of the women's team too?

If it's the same skill set it could be operationally efficient to have the same person overseeing both. Hard to imagine the women's side benefitting from anywhere near the same resources as the men's.

I thought they were completely separate entities.

I don’t wanna sound like some misogynist but realistically how many DoF who have a vast knowledge of men’s football also have it for women’s? Surely it requires a separate role, otherwise it undermines the woman’s team.

Probably aren’t any. You wouldn’t expect the sporting director of Bayern Munich to have expertise on league 2 would you?

From what I know the vast majority of professional women’s clubs are completely separate entities to the men’s clubs from which they take their name.

I believe this is the case with United as well. No harm in the club supporting the women’s team in what direction they should take to improve, but seems a waste of time having someone head up both. They clearly require radically different expertise and focus.

Completely sexist to say we need someone to help the women's team kick in the right direction.
